Kristia49: Yeah, noticed a few like that with the nurses.

Hi Kristia - I work in aged care in the community which I like better than in a residence. The people I see are more able, bit better health.

Love to see them, and yes I try to bring some sunshine into their day sometimes. Some just want you to have a cuppa and a chat, especially if they don't see many people during the day, some are not so chatty but that's OK.

Personally I would not like to work in the homes - I like getting out and about in my car, bit of a free bird, don't know how I would deal with going to the same place every day. cool

Kristia49: I'm doing a cert111 in aged care. What a eye opener, we are training at the moment in the high care part. The old people are such little darlings, if i can put a smile on their face or a laugh, i feel i am making their life a little happier.

Good on you Kristia. applause My mum used to work in an aged care facility and it sounds like they could do with more people like you who actually want to do the work and take care of the oldies. Seems like the facilities now are often too busy watching the bottom line rather than providing proper care and staff just want to get in, do what they have to instead of really doing their job to the best of their ability. Very sad when some of these people hardly see their own families then the people who are supposed to be caring for them don't give a rats as long as they get paid.

Best of luck with it all Kristia. Although I know luck will have nothing to do with your success. Your dedication and big heart will. bouquet

Those I know that work in the industry are kind, hardworking people who deserve to be paid a hell of a lot more for the hours they work.

They tell me it's a very rewarding occupation and I take my hat of to them.......and to you. tip hat

I agree, it is like some of the staff don't really care, i feel so sorry for them, i'd like to to take them for a spin in the garden, they never seem to get any son. Just lay there, waiting to, you know what. And very few families comes in, if only they spent a few days with them so they could see the total boredom they go through. And buy them some nice clothes, warm socks. I feel like going to the 2nd hand shop and getting them some stuff.

My daughter-in-law went into aged/intensive care when she left school. She went on to half owning her own place after 5 long years of doing it, finally selling it and quitting working when she got married.

But it was a lot of hard work on her. Some of the oldies were a bit heavy and shifting them to wipe their bums and change the linen has taken its toll on her. Especially when there was nobody around to help her move them.

Nursing homes are expensive to maintain. And the cost of having someone there is very high if you want a decent service for them.

Talking with a guy last week about his mum being in a home. Costs are very high. His sisters insisted that the 'family home' be sold to cover the costs. He didn't want this to happen and said that the rent they could get would only be about $100 per week different and he would pay that out of his own pocket to see she got proper care. Didn't happen. He is not happy as a lot of the facilties have nimimal staff working and are overworked.

Kristia, wish you luck in your career. I am sure that things are getting better these days. Just be aware when you go for a job, try and chat with some of the staff to find out what it is really like. Many staff only do minimal work and those that care for what they are doing are taken advantage of. My big mistake with my last job.
