I got quiet a shock when I arrived at work this morning The elderly lady I worked for asked me to dig out her magnificent rose garden one of the best I have ever seen rose rose rose rose I have taken care of it for many years now but she is starting to fall over and has fallen into the rose garden quiet a few times when she is potting about in it.

Some of the roses are the old fashion ones like the "David Austin Roses" that have a beautiful fragrance and bloom forever compared to the the modern roses that fall apart after a short bloom.

So that is what I am doing ATM half of the roses are out and gone to the tip sigh sad flower I will dig the rest out next week , then will rebuild her an easy to maintain garden for her.

Think her neighbours will get a shock when they see half the roses missing it is a huge garden and can fully understand her wanting them gone.

Awww that's so sad for her, having to give up something she must love so much. Getting old sure can suck sometimes. Can you give the bushes away to people. Wish I was closer, I would take some.

Oh my... I know how hard it is... but then I got to thinking, you have sandy soil over there..? although, I am not saying it would be easy... not at all...

My girlfriend and I dug out about 10 of mine that I had round the back to bring to the front yard.. They were old plants and really hard to dig up...but their main tap roots had reached far and wide.. and my soil is red clay... Jeez, it was tough work..

We had to dig quite some way around and out to not put the fork into the tap roots... anyway, they transported OK... had the new holes waiting already..

I think that was the trick.. to have the new holes ( their new home) ready filled with slow draining water to put them straight into...

The digging was easy the tap root was long on them but being they were going to the tip out came my loppers didn't matter where I cut the root system , even if you cut the tap root and leave it long it will still come back to life roses are very tough and can handle a bit of rough handling. It is a good idea to clean up the root system on most plants when transplanting gives oxygen back into the plant after the shock of being uprooted.

If it would have been clay that would have been hard yakka I have about 30 roses to dig out have done half so far some of them a very big old shrubs. Couldn't fit any more on the back of my Ute chockers , full up.
Anyhow it was rather a sad day sad flower sad flower
I am now looking at designing a new garden for her I think she is sad today too poor old dear blues

Yes we're going over low maintained shrubs and lots of colour but having said that she lives coastal which limits certain shrubs and ground covers that can't handle coastal area's so I need to go through my books and look at as much colour I can get also nothing that is spiteful just a soft flowing look. The ground is well maintained with manure peet mulched into the ground and other minerals over the years the ground is very rich good quality dark rich soil to work with thumbs up Plus the watering system has it's own bore so that is another bonus thumbs up happy gardening I am looking forward to it I will take before and after shots.

curly28: Actually I feel like an evil axe rose killer I think I am sadder than I thought I was.... I was just thinking I left all those poor rose shrubs at the tip

Maybe somebody came along and picked them up and took them home Curls?

I know what you mean about re-cycling, I am always finding another home for something or other, I hate throwing something out that I think someone could use and be glad of???

But as you say, some people want things for nothing and they want you to deliver to them! Nah - not getting into that.

I have a 'library' which is a collection of books that I have read or people have given me and I lend them to a few of my oldies who can't get out much let alone carry heavy books. They love it, I have a throw out now and again when I am sick of the sight of them. But even then I take them to a local hospice for them to pick over. thumbs up
