So I did some checking and find that this woman had to travel 27 miles 1 way through Richmond to her job probably as a chambermaid. This includes a 70 cent toll each way unless she took to city streets to avoid it. My guess is she was making minimum wage at best. Another question springs to mind. Where are the father(s) of these 2 kids? Statistics would indicate that there's more than one. After she got knocked up from the first one he probably took off so she made the same bad choice again with another low life baby maker.
I don't feel any anger at this woman, I pity her. She is as much a victim as her 2 kids.

I think the lifestyle that we live at this time makes us forget what the priorities are.
There are good take care places for children there I know, but what happened that she never took them there?
In my country a doctor did the same with her only child, he forgot she was sleeping in the car. he forgot to take her to the day care because she was quiet. so sad.

Minimum wage for someone over 21 years of age here is £6.19 per hour, so for 7 hours work that's £43.63.

Child care cover for that time period would be £35-40 at least, take off petrol and Maional Insurance and she would have ended up in debt at the end of every working day.

If she didn't work and lived off benefits, she and her children would be shunned and belittled by society.

Y'know, maybe she's none too clever, but was trying to do her best in desperate circumstances?

In my neck of the woods and our brutal heat here we have warnings all over the place about leaving your children or animals in the car. It takes no time at all for them to die from heat related causes. And it is an extremely painful death from what medical science says. Yet we still have this kind of thing happen here. Also in my area there is all kinds of government childcare to help people. Well there might not be soon with all the cutbacks hmmm How so do you see her as a victim as her children? I am just not understanding. I don't hate her. I feel sorry for her. But I do not see her as a victim. She made a conscious decision to leave the two young children in the car for an extended period of time. What was so much more important than their lives that would make this act ok?

I amnot judgemental Jac, who knows what was in her brain that day.
I want to think nobody wants to put a child in danger on purpose, for this I gave the doctor's example who forgot his child inside the car.
sometimes those persons don't choose the ideal to do and the sad here is the children are death.

If you go back and re-read the story you can glean some insight into this 22 YO life. It was only her third day on the job. She probably didn't want to risk asking the hotel to help her with childcare for fear of losing it. She did check on the kids so it wasn't a case of forgetting about them. My guess is she probably didn't grow up in an Ozzie & Harriet household with both parents so she had no good role models. She obviously had no other options and she didn't dump the kids on somebody else or abandon them like the fathers probably did. She stuck with them and tried to care for their needs the best she knew how. It just wasn't good enough and led to their deaths.

I wonder which is worse: Aborting the two kids or having them die like they did?

I would. Forever. Lessons need to be taught.

I recommend you never go into teaching...and learn a few things before you have kids.

Cyn_Real: so true...

- from the woman side, I also don't have any proper word other than stupid...

- and from the kids fathers side, I would call it as male chauvinism in different form... their selfishness was balanced and compensated by that woman's carelessness...

Yeah, she may well be stupid.

She might have a very low IQ indeed.

What are you going to do about that?

I don't understand why she didn't check on some kind of child care where the state she resided in would've paid for.Or if she had any family who would've watched her children for her.

It's obvious she didn't use good judgement or her two little children may still be alive.

How easily available is free childcare in her area, or the US in general?

Affordable childcare when you need it is almost as rare as rocking horse dung over here. It can cost more than half of your earnings, or even more than your earnings.

There are schemes to help, but it ain't easy. It inhibits a lot of people from moving forward from abject poverty.

It's too late to worry about how available child care would've been for her anyway.

It's just an unfortunate situation no matter how many ways you slice it.
