Hi all. Could you give me some advice? My son and his wife moved to Melbourne recently as my son was offered a fantastic job. They seem very happy with their new lives and I have a feeling they won't be returning to the UK.
I actually live and work in Spain and the flights are extremely expensive, but of course I'm desperate to visit. Unfortunately my work restricts the times I'm able to fly unless I take unpaid leave. Perhaps ex-pats who fly back to the UK regularly would be able to offer more advice than native Australians, but any advice is more than welcome.

NEWS FLASHhuman trafficking boats are the cheapest on account of current clients not having visas so won't be filling berths on said boats .

Make sure you research very carefully. Go onto a flight site and keep varying the dates for travelling as much as you're able to given your work. Last time I flew back to the UK (2 years ago) I saved hundreds of dollars just by travelling a day later because it was then out of season.
Must admit I'm not really au fait with the best way to achieve economical fares and so on .. Notablonde has probably given you the best advice .. just wanted to suggest that you keep in mind that parts of Aus can get quite cold in winter, including Melbourne ..
So don't believe all the tourism ads re sunshine and hot weather, that's only for a short while in my experience
The Australian dollar is currently at its lowest level in may years against the US$ so right now is the cheapest time to travel... If you check Bangkok Ticketing Online you might locate discount Airline Tickets, Madrid/Bangkok/Melbourne/Bangkok/Madrid

Yes I think that's the key. I have an app on my iphone called skyscanner which searches all the flight operators and lists all the prices and flight durations on any given date, but even the cheapest flight providers don't seem to vary their prices much from date to date. As far as I can see there is no cheap time to travel to Australia unlike flights to other destinations.

Strange because my daughter in law only recently commented that the winter was mild there. In fact today 12 degrees and the forecast for Friday 18 degrees, hardly cold!

I would imagine since it is our off season the best time would be now.
