Got a feeling that now is the best time to fly from UK as a lot of Brits and northern hemisphere folk like to get away from their winter (Nov/Dec Jan) which is our summer of course?

So, yes this is our winter - and of course northern hemisphere summer when the weather is the best for you?

The cost can vary a lot not just from airline to airline but as you probably know, mid week might be cheaper than Sat/Sunday? and depending on airports you fly from, re fuel and into have differing charges which are added to your flight?

Good luck with that, enjoy your stay in Melbourne, hope you get to see more of this great country/continent while you are here.

janie1305: Hi all. Could you give me some advice? My son and his wife moved to Melbourne recently as my son was offered a fantastic job. They seem very happy with their new lives and I have a feeling they won't be returning to the UK.

I actually live and work in Spain and the flights are extremely expensive, but of course I'm desperate to visit. Unfortunately my work restricts the times I'm able to fly unless I take unpaid leave. Perhaps ex-pats who fly back to the UK regularly would be able to offer more advice than native Australians, but any advice is more than welcome.

Hi Janie , The cheapest time to travel to Australia is in our winter which is really very mild in comparasian. Our winter months rarely get into single figures in the day time and sunshine abounds ,,,mostly. If you book ahead youll get the best deal and keep an eye out for specials using one of the many apps available.Once in Australia cheap flights starting from $39.00 interstate can be booked thru Jetstars friday frenzy sales just join online.Winter in the southern states are cheaper to explore but it is the peak season in our north.Queensland and NT are cheaper in the summer months which is the wet season ,Hot & wet but with plenty of nice weather throughout.Enjoy your stay here Im sure youll fall in love!

Thanks Kizzy and everyone else who has responded.

My son says that from time to time there are flight sales but it means constantly being on the lookout. My ex husband is visiting them for Xmas because he and my son are cricket fans so they will be enjoying The Ashes.

I'm hoping to go next year, perhaps with my daughter who went in February with her boyfriend. They loved it there and had a great time.

They live in Toorak, Melbourne. Anyone know it?

Hi Janie. Yes, everyone knows Toorak. It's the suburb where many of the wealthiest Melburnians live. Apart from large walled mansions, there are also some apartment blocks that are more affordable.
I had some visitors from Spain this week and they observed that prices for everyday items here are about double what you would pay in Spain, except petrol, which is cheaper. But we also figured out that wages are about double or more.
So despite the dollar having dropped a little the last fdew months, you'll still need lots of spending money.

Interesting thank you, but not surprising. Despite the crisis here in Spain it is still very cheap to live even on the relatively poor salaries many people earn.

My son is very fortunate to live in Toorak, I know, though he isn't living in a walled mansion. laugh

I'd better start saving now then!

I thought only the South Africans living in Melbourne live behind high walls. It is a nostalgia thing!
