Hi serene, I think it just takes time. 
It is ok for a while to feel bad and be withdrawn, but at some stage you have to kick yourself in the bum, go out and keep on living. I saw people drowning in self pity and that definately didn't work.

Never had a broken heart so I'm not sure how, or if, you do recover other than the passing of time.
I'd probably try to remember the not so good parts of the relationship, rather than wearing rose tinted glasses for my memories.

I guess, firstly they have to make up their mind if they want to feel the way they currently are.
If the answer is no, usually it means it is time to let go. Then they have to find a way to grieve the "loss"
The trick is to not allow it drag you down too far, and allow some down time but, dont let it control it your life for too much longer than it already has.

don't be unhappy about it , two mes's and a flower to night look fishy . I just had a look at ordinary looking members from NZ and asked . Not sure why I bothered though .Yes, you do need to give yourself time to 'mourn' the death of a relationship if that is not too dramatic.
But then after enough time you have to take a look in the mirror, give yourself a stern talking to
pick yourself up by your boot straps and get on with life!Self pity, regrets etc are negative and as long as you feel negative about yourself and your life you are less likely to attract a new mate?

Haven't we all had a few of them in our life times. Doesn't seem to get any less painful either each time it happens. Each time hurts like the first one.
As everyone has been said, tis only time that can heal and at the time we all know we don't believe it will ever get better and can't imagine ever recovering from the hurt.
But we somehow manage to go on with a little help from our friends and families.
Hope your friend takes heart in the fact that everyone knows how it feels and they hold on till the pain subsides.
