speed dating would never work for me since I would be relying on personality and not looks for make an impression. Being larger the initial impression tends to be on the negative side.
Coupled with I am not that great at chit chat and like to talk to people as and when I feel comfortable with them.

Speed dating is an expensive night out usually. I've never done it because it always seems to cost upwards of 30 euros to meet quite possibly a mixed bunch of people. Never knew anyone who met their partner at one, but anything could happen.

It does cost 30 or 35 euro. I prefer it to trying to meet someone online. The only thing I didn't like about it is there can be a big age-gap between people, people could be from 20- 39 or from 30-49.

I think they do different age groups on different nights. One night 30s to 40s, another night 20s to 30s so you would have to select the night the suits you best to go. They're all too young for me now
i dont think i could come up with that many lies so close together

That's a pity. It might still be worth making a phone-call as I saw people who were outside the age-bracket there before.

I heard great things about speed dating, i couldn't do it though, just seems a bit too cattle mart to me.
I tried speed dating before and did not like it at all.
I was chatting to guys about half my age
ended up chatting to one guy for more than the few minutes and we got kicked out 
I fancied his uncle who was a vet, and the young guy was trying to organise a date for me and the uncle 
never again
