. No guarantees with 2nd hand engine you could be getting like for like I could not get my a4 through the test was going to get engine and then tractor wiped me out on road. Got mazda6 two weeks ago no nct for 2 years and a good deal maybe you should look into changing

i was an mot tester back in england, the emissions standards are as strict over there as they are here...
the difference between ireland and the uk is test centres are independant and will carry out repairs as well as tests...
when i tested cars i was duty bound by the test authorities to find in favour of the customers, there were shades of grey that fell under the remit or 'pass and advise', these were judgement calls made by the tester and would be supported by the senior site tester and ultimatly the mot testing body and greavance procedure and inspectorate...
when testing, we would adjust lights, adjust emissions where possible, top up levels, change bulbs, inflate tyres and change wiper blades...none of which gets done in the irish test...
give garage autonomy and a system like the uk one and nct would be less of a balls ache and actually more affordable (half the price over there and free retests inside 14 days), but hey, this is ireland, and that is sensible thinking, the two aint gonna jump into bed anytime soon methinks....

Change the car unless the value of the car is worth changing engines.

There's some great bargains out there.

Hi Pedro

I bought an engine for my old car last August -spent nearly 1000 euros after engine and labour costs --
honestly it really wasn't worth it --I ended up having to buy a new car just there at beginning of May .
My old car was just under 10 years old --perhaps i'm mistaken , but I think yours is older than that .
Take some more time to think about it before spending so much on an replacement engine --that money could go towards a good deposit on a newer car .
I really regret buying that engine last year --I just don't want you to make the same mistake I did handshake
