Okay, a few have asked for the pics while I was away. This is the Dumeresq River at Texas, Qld. Spent 4 nights here just trying to get away from work. For those that want to just get away from everyone, good place to start.

Looks good to me. Anyway where there are no traffic snarls and internet, tv's etc sounds alright? thumbs up

Bloody noise in cafes is my bug-bear at the moment very mad

Went to the Jazz festival at Broadbeach at the weekend, sat in a cafe and ordered coffee, (chance to sit down too) they had a local radio station on the PS system blasting out heavy rock. I had something to say to the owner. Just a bit of thought please? cheering

Main reason I stayed there was the peace and quiet. I stopped at the end of the cleared area and only had a neighbour not too close. Sound of the running water and the fish jumping was about it.

Went from there to Bollon for a couple of nights but camping by the Wallam Creek had a concrete path running by and people were very friendly and had a chat on their way to town and the showers.

The camper is basically just a shell with a 3/4 bed over the front and a single across the back. Guy I bought it off (the week before I left) had ripped out the sink and left the basics of a flimsy cupboard in it - sort of came adrift while on some rough roads. So I need to do some work on it.

Even though 6 foot wide and 6 foot high, I did manage to stay warm and dry inside. And did spend most days outside in the warm sunshine so not a problem.

I enjoyed being far away from the maddening crowds with no rush to get anywhere by any time except for being the 5 weeks I needed to get from Burren Junction to Louth Races (about 400kms). So visited a few places I haven't been before, and got one up on my surveyiing mates by visiting the "1 Ton Post" near Mungindi which marks the easterly straight line point of the NSW/Qld Border. Then the border goes all over the place following rivers up and down to the coast.

Mr Surveyor Cameron installed this 2 metre out of the ground post to mark the point in October 1881 and it it estimated that it weighs 1 Imperial Ton.

Also had a great day at the Mungindi Races which was an unexpected event.

A lot of the trips I do with my mates in the outback are to places described by explorers. Main one being Len Beadell who put in so many of the iconic "roads" out there in the 50s for the Woomera rocket testing, and to locate the 2 atomic bomb sights.

Last year, we travelled up the Centreline of Fire for the rockets from Woomera. After much searching and calculations (3 people with surveying backgrounds does help), we did manage to locate one of his Astronomical Survey Pegs which we gathered had not been found since he put it in way back in the 50s.

The main highlight of this trip for me was finding a marker peg put in by my old boss way back in 1954.

Think I need to go back to work so that I can have time to myself.

hmm I can just see that happening!

So it sounds like you are going to have to learn to say no because you want to do something for yourself.

Im sure you can manage it, so start practicingtongue

I am well known in my industry as the one as one who says NO to requests. And they also know that I can provide a valid reason for saying it.frustrated frustrated

Now I have no excuse. Tried yesterday. Went to the Vic 4WD (& Fishing) Show. Met up with a few mates.

1. Him. "Are you going to the 4WD Club's 50th Birthday celebrations next month."

Me. "Naw, have been away and the closing date for applying is long gone.I am only here to look at something for my vehicle for easier touring"

Him. "Naw, I am sure Pam will make an exception for you." frustrated

2. Him (a guy I used to work with) "This Fishing Show is great. What are you looking at."?'

Me. "I only came along to look at the 4WD stuff. I don't eat fish so not interestedin the Fishing Show. But I did buy this."Him. "What is it?"

Me. "A Diji Barbi plate that a mate had up at Louth Races. Can be used over an open fire or on a gas cooker." Caught up with a of 4WD couple of mates who had this for years and did say how much they had used it over the years.

Him. "Exactly what we are looking for to cook the fish on when we go out for a weekend."

You never know what someone else is considering or looking for until it is mentioned.

Me. Yeah, I didn't really see what I really wanted at the Shows but it was great to catch up with a few mates.

Wow, that looks like a great spot. I wouldn't mind spending some time away with a camper or motor home. Or what about that thing on the back of a ute. What's it called? Which is best you reckon?

Everything depends on what you want in life. I bought the vehicle for what I will be doing next year. I bought the slide-on because of NOW.

I do a lot of remote touring and the slide-on will not be suitable for the stuff I intend on next year. So got to look at what I will be doing shortly and for the future. It has served its purpose.

I do a lot of remote touring so that slide-on is up for sale. It does not serve my next and future needs. If I was going to do a bit of touring where I want to visit Birdsville or Oodnadatta, then it is great for those places.

But a lot of my stuff is in remote areas frequently without recognised tracks where the centre of gravity is pivotal.

I could not recommend anything unless I knew what you intend to do. If it was the more 'popular' spots, this would be suitable. Not for the areas that I normally travel where our early explorers went.

Guess I can rub it in a bit not being a worker these days. But I am doing my best for the economy....I left one open and someone else needs a job.. But it is a hard life. Lots of things to do, so much time to do them. Why do today that which you can put off until tomorrow?

Was starting to get myself organised and putting stuff on the calender so that I could do some of the different car shows and 4wd trips the different clubs have on offer. Why do they all organise things on the same day? Decisions, decisions.

Just out of Quilpie, Qld is Lake Houdraman. Pulled up there and thought what a great spot. And it was. This was my view whne I set up my camper.

When you can wake up to this, it doesn't matter what you have so long as you can enjoy it.

About 2 hours later, the wind came up and I did remember a guy a few days before using his phone to check out the weather at Quilpie...big rain coming. After the cold wind came up, I decided to move on to Coopers Creek, Windorah. Apparently they had 19mm of rain at Quilpie and everyone was bogged in. Good decision by me.

So true, as long as I had peace and tranquility. I would be happy.

So many nice places and people out there to see and meet.

Having been back home for a couple of weeks, it is hard to settle down to tis non-working life.

First battle was Aussie Post who were suppoosed to be holding my mail until the Monday after I got home. Come Tuesday and I get about 1 weeks mail. Postie said "I am the relief postie, I will check it out when I get back and see what else there is for you."

Okay, 2 months worth of bills, 2 months worth of subsription magazines and newsletters, 2 months where it is time to renew subscriptions.....nada on Wednesday.

Thursday and I decide to chase it up with Aussie Post. "Thank you for your call. We very much appreciate you contacting us. We are here to service you, out valued customer. How may we be of service?"

Chase this up on the Friday "Yes, sir. Your call has been logged. We do intend to respond to you within 24-48 hours of your call."

For some reason, my area does not get mail. Except my backlog. About the only good thing about my mail (I do not include the overdue power bills) was the Seniors Card.

Damn, forgot to take that out on Tuesday night for dinner with my daughter. But Thursday I got 25% off my haircutbanana banana Even though they took 50% of my hairdunno

But getting back to Texas. I did meet an ex-con who was in for shooting someone. Was a bit of thinking on my part of what I had gotten myself into. After a bit of chatting, it did come down to both of us knowing places and people we both knew from many years ago.

Another guy had been camping there for the previos 12 weeks. He had needed some work done on his vehicle. He reckoned it would need another 6 weeks of the free camping so that he could get his pension savings up to a reasonable level.

A lot of people out there for so many different reasons.
