I had some visitors form Spain on one of my trips to the bush last month and they apparently were genuinely fearful of what they would encounter during the trip. It seems they'd watched various nature documentaries, such as "Deadly 60" and such where the risk associated with poisonous and dangerous animals is grossly exaggerated. Apparently we are renowned for deadly spiders and snakes.
They wanted to know what precautions we would be taking once we got out of the car. I said "None, we just wear boots and long pants in case of snakes." I know, I missed my opportunity to string them along with a story about attacking snakes being slashed down with machetes or something. Or telling them about drop- bears..... too corny really.

Just wondering, has anyone here had a potentially dangerous or terrifying encounter with a wild creature? Bitten by a spider? Snake? Attacked by a croc? Stone fish? Whatever.

Mosquito bites, Ross River Virus is a mosquito-borne disease that is becoming more common. It causes arthritis and flu-like symptoms which can be severe and debilitating.
The symptoms vary from person to person but include painful and/or swollen joints, sore
muscles, aching tendons, skin rashes, fever, tiredness, headaches and swollen lymph nodes. Less common
symptoms include sore eyes, a sore throat, nausea, and tingling in the palms of the hands or soles of the feet.

20 something people every year in Hervey Bay alone stand on Stone Fish requiring hospital visit.

Meningitis is another dangerous possibility.

Kangaroo are very dangerous to.

trap door spider, blue ring octopus, conshell, sharks and stingers to name few

Bull Ants and Jumping Ants can be very painful, shellback ticks...

Quite a few people have died from King Brown bites and Queensland's deadly Taipan.

If you look closely at the Brown Snakes stomach you can see where the dog below, who was tied up on his chain bit the snake.

I have nearly sat on a red bellied black snake, still dont know how I ended up 10ft up the road from the tussock/seat running and yelling for Mum!

I have come nose to nose with a copperhead who was in the strike position, poised on the edge of the bank I was walking up. We both looked at each other, stopped, and in unison backed off and away...

I have picked up a tin and felt a wet squash under my finger, looked inside and saw a red backed spider squashed and another right beside my finger in the tin. Tin was dropped very quickly!

I have walked down a gravel road in twilight and wondered why the cracks in the road were moving. There had been a heap of snakes hatch and I had walked into the middle of them. I carefully stepped over them!

I have also been moving a herd of cows, the dog got between a mum and her calf. Cow charged dog, dog ran behind me for protection. I picked up a rock and somehow hit the cow on the inside of the nostril. She stopped dead, wavered on her feet then turned around and went back to her calf.

so not just native animals are dangerous!

I've seen these documentaries. I can understand the fear of those Spanish people.

According to the Discovery Channel:

If you surf in Australia you'll get eaten by a shark.

If you have a dog in the backyard a snake or a spider will kill it.

Every little insect has poison in them.

Also Steve Irwin's show made it look like there are crocs everywhere!

oh its not that bad long as you walk carefully, don't swim while the sharks are hungry and don't swim when Stingers are about, but dogs in north eastern Australia more often get killed by Shellback Ticks.

Irwin was a bit loose in the attic, but it was a stingaray that got him

Don't worry Pom Pom

If you come to australia they give you a can of bug spray for the spiders,
Roll on for the Mosquitos
Pair of pantyhose s for the stingers,
A shovel for the snakes,
And a crash course on how to avoid crocs and sharks. WARNING DO NOT SWIM HERE

Well, I think that the most dangerous animal in Australia at present would be my ex-wife. She is more venomous than any other creature alive on the planet!

If you come across her, be ware! You will be shot, hung, drawn, quartered, accused of being a cross-dresser, and be character assassinated in about 2.5 seconds. There is no antidote to her bite either.....

Oh and she will steal everything she possibly can and think she is doing the right thing while sitting in church every sunday.

Avoid her all all costs if you value your lives!
