epirb: All they while having paid tax . Not small amounts either . A friend of my son has just come back from working in Western Aus mines . He was paying $ 1500 tax PER WEEK

Hope your son understands the Aust Tax System, because if your son worked say four weeks in July before losing his job, he would have been taxed on an annual income projection figure.
Like-in say he was taxed on his pay during July AU$6000.00.
And he is/has left Australia, and won't returning in tax-year 2013/2014, the rate taxed was taxed on an annual income yet he only actually earned a lesser annual sum; probably would place him in a much lower tax rate if any, so he needs to file a tax return asap explaining that he has left to country and won't be returning. The tax department will then in two or three days will send him a cheque for the overpaid amount of tax...

wash2u: To be that much Tax, he must have been earning megabucks. Not wanting to brag but I was earning $2,000 per week but only paying about $450 or so in tax.

Back to surfing. You can receive $650 per week not to work. No taxes, free medical, subsidised rent, subsidise power. Why work when you can go surfing?
I shall have to recheck the numbers even though he was paid very well , Surfing does not pay so well here . Was a time people could get a job search grant to buy an air ticket to Aus one way to join your dole queues '93 was the last time I heard about that . Surfing pays well in Aussie compared to here . Whats more those seaweeds always have the loosest woman around .
