Department of Defense begins 'prudent' planning for Oct. 1 shutdown; furloughs again a possibility

The Department of Defense has begun planning for the possibility of a government shutdown.

"It's prudent management for us to update our plans," Cmdr. Bill Urban, a spokesman for the DOD Comptroller's office told Stars and Stripes. "We're certainly using past plans as a basis for this potential shutdown."

The fiscal year is set to end Sept. 30 and the White House's Office of Management and Budget sent out a memo this week advising agencies to develop a plan if a shut-down occurs Oct. 1. Part of that plan will include identifying the services and personnel needed to do essential functions.
A shutdown would result in disruptions similar to those caused by this summer's sequestration-related furloughs, Christian Marrine, vice president for National Security and Acquisition Policy at the Aerospace Industries Association, told Defense News.

April 2011 all over again

Faced with a similar shut-down threat in April 2011, the Pentagon developed a plan that included the furlough of some 400,000 civilian workers. Only those identified as critical for health and safety were spared, as were uniformed military personnel who would have remained on the job without pay.

Dragos1: well, I suppose I should not joke around without reading what the story is about. I have to say it is not so surprising, People (groups) not getting along. Just politicians throwing their weight around and all the while common folk have not a lot to do but make sure their families are reasonably protected against those that might take advantage of the situation. I was thinking about the term "Obamacare" even if you like it or not.....or neither...it seems like a stupid name for it, especially if the plan is truly supposed to be a long term Health reform. Giving it the name of one president is at the very least narcissistic and what about after the next president comes along? The name should have been something clever and not so connected to one person. Even a good sales person should see that. Two groups of adults that can't play together fairly. It is pathetic indeed.

CasualCarol: I am dismayed (even embarrassed) that so many Americans have so little knowledge about their own Government! They don't even know the name of the law they are bashing, blaming Democrats for not voting as a group in the House of Representatives for our current crises, and are positive our president is undertaking nefarious programs and is single-handedly destroying our Nation!

They remind me of the callers to the local radio station complaining about the deer-crossing signs! How dare someone put up a sign on such a busy road permitting deer to cross!
