I've actually experimented with solar laptops - using discounted solar panels that produced 5 watts, a 366mhz Apple iBook and a home built power converter, a volume of cells that would cover the lid of the laptop produced about a tenth of the necessary power to maintain the system.
This looks like it'd work.. but it would have the same problem I did - laying out the cells to catch the light took a lot of space and only really worked outside in direct sunshine

the cells i was using produced 5 watts EACH, I should have said. they're now pinned up in my bedroom window, charging a lead acid battery which powers a few lamps (converted to 12v LED) as needed.
