The real trouble will start if the debt ceiling is not raised. It will be bad for everyone, not just America.

JeanKimberley: define trouble

laugh In our country, the government shuts down every summer for 12 weeks. No trouble has come from it.

At least the workers will be compensated for lost wages when the shutdown comes to a end. When that happens however is a good question.

If America defaults, it will affect the global economy. The chain reaction will trickle down through the countries that directly depend on the American dollar and in turn, countries that depend on those countries that are affected will also be affected. That has the potential to touch just about every country on the planet.

I thought I read somewhere that they'd all been told to return to work?

If not, being compensated is all well and good, but in the meantime how do they manage? Not everyone has savings to dip into.

it definitely does have a far reaching impact which is why I find it strange to see some hoping for our demise...strange. we also have a state (Colorado) that has 13 counties planning to form their own state, texas filed for secession last spring. not that those secession actions really matter, but they are a vote of No Confidence certainly

it is the other countries who will hurt the most because foregin aid expenses will be the first to go...under any kind of emergency spending they will not be included

But if someone's close to their limits on their credit cards that's not going to cover their mortgage/rent, plus everything else.

Maybe they have, I haven't kept up on the news the last few days.

I am willing to bet the majority has little to no savings to fall back on. Most were living cheque to cheque as it was, now being thrown to the wolves, there will be a lot of problems for them just trying to make ends meet.

Notice though that the politicians are still being paid.
