I don't think we have that here in Aus Tor confused but I hope you NZers have a BLAST lol!

It's illegal, in NSW anyway, to let off fireworks in suburban backyards - has been for years.

And that's why it's called the Nanny State rollers lol

Nothing. Here in Victoria (same in other states?) we outlawed all forms of fireworks, uuuuuh, I think it was in the 70's? This was after too many kids were blinded and/or had their thumbs blown off.
Nevertheless, people manage to get hold of "contraband" fireworks and let a few off, but that's mainly at New Year. And Chinese New Year, and any Saturday night when you've got nothing better to do.

And as for lighting a bonfire - forget it; fire risk is too high.
Victoria is nicknamed "The Nanny State" because it knows what's good for people. Usually that means anything fun must be bad fior y ou.

Not that much Torless. Each state has a unique climate and weather patterns, eg tropical, dry, cold, wet, windy etc. In the case of Melbourne, all of those in the one day. laugh

Local road laws and such can vary in minor ways, but less so these days as they are making an effort to standardise them.

I certainly remember Lilee. Guess you're too young.
He and his cronies tried to blow up the british parliament way back in the 1600's (I think.) Of course he was burnt at the stake, which is why we used to make a "Guy Fawkes" out of sticks with some old clothes on it to stick in the middle of the "bomfire".

In 1999, all State Road Authorities got together to create the Australian Road Rules (ARR) for all States and Territories to adopt. I remember having to provide comments on the implications in NSW.

Stupidist one Victoria insisted on was "Illegal to park on the nature strip."

NSW had the Rule "Illegal to block the footpath." Remember many sessions going over the actual meaning of this and what could be enforced In NSW and many other States, "footpath" means that area between the carriageway (tarred bit) and the boundary. What most people think of as "footpath" is the little bit you walk on. Okay, people walk on the grass bits as well. But generally referring to the concrete strip (1.2-1.5m wide) where this is one provided. Generally, if there was a 1.5m clear path passed a car parked off the road, they wouldn't get booked.

So developers used this loophole to make narrow road pavements (costs much less) and allow people to park on the grass out the front of their home. NSW adopted the ARR in the early 2000s. Vic with all its odd bits and pieces it demanded only adopted it (with many exceptions) in 2010 (I think).

And still the developers are not providing wide enough streets to pass other cars when someone parks on the street. I have a week of slalom in my daughter's street while I feed her many animals while she is away.

Back to Guy Fawkes. He was the one caught trying to blow up the English Parliament way back when. Some Commonwelath countries still think it was a good idea and do it symbolically every year.elephant elephant

When I was growing up, we had fireworks on Empire Day, around May, I think. Kids used to get a half day from school to build their bonfires. Because we had a paddock and dad had a joinery shop, we had plenty of wood, plus any dead stuff from around the paddock or down the back. Neighbours and friends would also deliver/dump what they could and we ended up with a fire that would go nearly all night. Embers still hot 3-4 days later.

In Brisbane every year we have river fire in September to celebrate the start of Brisbane festival. Its bigger than New year fireworks. Army helicopters in their groups fly only few mitres above the river and then superhornets display their roaring power over exultant crowds.

Here are some great photos from the event that took place couple of moths ago.

but you will have to copy and paste the whole link to get the images.

Hi Torless.

Here in the UK it goes on for weeks unfortunately.sigh Controlled parties are fine but even then they can cause death. This happened last year and 7 people were killed.

My animals get very stressed especially the dog.

Tonight could be a washout as it's pouring with rain.

What movie? Not V for Vendetta?

Just reading about that movie and apparently that's where these "anonymous" masks come from. They are meant to be an image of Guy Fawkes, who's made out to be a hero of anti-establishment.

Some facts on Guy Fawkes.

In 1605, thirteen young men planned to blow up
the Houses of Parliament. Among them was
Guy Fawkes, Britain's most notorious traitor.

After Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603, English Catholics who had been persecuted under her rule had hoped that her successor, James I, would be more tolerant of their religion. James I had, after all, had a Catholic mother. Unfortunately, James did not turn out to be more tolerant than Elizabeth and a number of young men, 13 to be exact, decided that violent action was the answer.

A small group took shape, under the leadership of Robert Catesby. Catesby felt that violent action was warranted. Indeed, the thing to do was to blow up the Houses of Parliament. In doing so, they would kill the King, maybe even the Prince of Wales, and the Members of Parliament who were making life difficult for the Catholics. Today these conspirators would be known as extremists, or terrorists.

To carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in a cellar, just under the House of Lords.

But as the group worked on the plot, it became clear that innocent people would be hurt or killed in the attack, including some people who even fought for more rights for Catholics. Some of the plotters started having second thoughts. One of the group members even sent an anonymous letter warning his friend, Lord Monteagle, to stay away from the Parliament on November 5th. Was the letter real?

The warning letter reached the King, and the King's forces made plans to stop the conspirators.

Guy Fawkes, who was in the cellar of the parliament with the 36 barrels of gunpowder when the authorities stormed it in the early hours of November 5th, was caught, tortured and executed.

It's unclear if the conspirators would ever have been able to pull off their plan to blow up the Parliament even if they had not been betrayed. Some have suggested that the gunpowder itself was so old as to be useless. Since Guy Fawkes and the other conspirators got caught before trying to ignite the powder, we'll never know for certain.

Even for the period which was notoriously unstable, the Gunpowder Plot struck a very profound chord for the people of England. In fact, even today, the reigning monarch only enters the Parliament once a year, on what is called "the State Opening of Parliament". Prior to the Opening, and according to custom, the Yeomen of the Guard search the cellars of the Palace of Westminster. Nowadays, the Queen and Parliament still observe this tradition.

On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, on November 5th, 1605, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Since then, November 5th has become known as Bonfire Night. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.

Some of the English have been known to wonder, in a tongue in cheek kind of way, whether they are celebrating Fawkes' execution or honoring his attempt to do away with the government.
