It's here again - the Gold Coast has been invaded by 30,000 hyped up, slightly drunk drinking over stimulated, crazy 17yo!! help

Gotta love em. I survived it as a parent a couple of years ago, no dramas, thank god. applause

Have to say I was freaked out until she got back safe and sound. thumbs up

What's your experiences, memories of your Schoolies?? Went to school in UK too long ago when we didn't have such a thing, probably just as well cool

Same here ladies, I left school two years before I was old enough to drink
wine

Not that that stopped me rolling on the floor laughing

Anyhoo, never had enough cash to go on a holiday and parents sure as heck weren't gonna pay for me.

Most of the kids seem to do the right thing and look out for each other. there are always a few idiots in every crowd, no matter what age. grin

Even though we live on the GC - my daughter and her friends booked an apartment in Surfers dunno and had a great time. Met lots of lovely peeps from all over.

They said the 'fights' etc that are shown in the 30 secs on the 6 pm news are in the minority, most of the kids just had fun? It is well controlled, no 'oldies' allowed in 'the hub', no alcohol in bands area on beach, and lots of older volunteers patrolling to help out, have a chat and even cook them brekkie!!! thumbs up

They don't know how good they have it? I don't know if I would be too chuffed if my daughter had gone o/s?? Too much can go wrong and different laws etc. sigh

Seriously though, I don't think our parents would have dreamed of letting us run off to god-knows-where doing god-knows-what when we were that young. Different times, I guess.

It's ironic really, these days 'kids' are quite often looked after by their parents until well into their twenties.

At that age many of us were working and independent.

This is true, Serene. Back then you worked and made money otherwise you were socially isolated. Maybe that's the difference. So many options to connect these days.

The first I heard about schoolies was mid-70s when my brother-in-law showed the scar on his leg where got he slashed by a broken beer bottle at the GC schoolies at end of 1970. He was a mad keen surfie, worked 12 hours every Sunday at a servo so he had money.

Me, on the otherhand, would work as a brickies labourer for my brother on Saturdays whenever I needed money. Finished my last exam on the Thursday and had a job on the Friday at a girls school.banana head banger

We never had schoolies,

I can not see the need for it,giving young ones the go ahead for drinking and drugs and goodness knows what .
I think it should be banned.

Fair enough most are well behaved, but we as adults are giving them the opportunity and go ahead to drink.,take drugs ect.

As they go off to schoolies we say, have fun and be careful and don't do any thing you shouldn't,.

laugh How smart are we.

My children never did the schoolies stuff. Maybe glad for that.

But did come up in conversation this week about a cruise I did with my family just before final separation. My daughter's mother did buy my 15 yo daughter drinks. And here was me making sure that the cabin I shared with my children and niece got all them "home safely" each night while my dear loving wife was sharing a cabin with my "ever so loving" sister.

I think it is more a general attitude to alcohol that we should think about Nature? We can't have bbq's at home with grog, slabs of beer, fridge full of wine for the adults, every 'win/celebration' be it birthday, sports team win tends to involve cracking open the champers or something like that? So we can't expect our 'kids' to not follow on from that and wait until the clock ticks over to the day they turn 18 to take part in a drink or 2??

Considering I was 16 when I first worked in a bar blushing I am the last person to lecture! wine

It is definitely a case of monkey see, monkey do? professor

Na not a monkey see monkey do.

I worked in bars and restaurants from much the same age as yourself.

I don't drink myself any more,I can can honestly say never was a big drinker, had my first at the legal age, never had alcohol in my fridge,
Never took my children to a hotel,
My children never seen me drunk.
Yet my children both drink now,not a lot but they do enjoy a few now and then.

Schoolies don't know what is in the drugs they take and the amount of alcohol they drink is discussing.

We are the ones our kids come to for guidance and it is our job to make sure they are kept safe.

Working in hotels showed me a lot of what the effects of alcohol does to some one,
And I for one,as a parent do not want my children to be subject to that kind of behaviour .

Most schoolies ate well behaved and are just cutting loose and having some well deserved fun ..

Its the toolies that often cause the problems, though the revenue officers ... I mean the Police officers seem to have these fiends sorted ..

I just let them on the bus at work for free and they always behave ... professor

Yes most are most behaved, and like Newlife said a lot of alcohol is used at home and parties, celebrations ect,but we as parents and adults should set a good example by sensible use of alcohol,

Not giving underage children the oportunity to drink alcohol and take drugs.
The ambos do a great job with all that need help,
And the police do all they can to prevent any trouble,

But it's still the case that these children are UNDERAGE.
