Well I lived a life without the luxuries that kids take for granted these days.

School work happened up to the last day, then we left school and started the reality of adulthood.

These days, there seems to be some sort of "graduation" ceremony from kindergarten, and just about every other year of school.

Kids (or perhaps parents) spend so much money on this stuff and I think that kids these days have been hoodwinked by commercialism, and TV shows of young people living a lifestyle of the rich and famous.

Nowdays money seems to be no option with kids (or parents) spending an absolute fortune on schoolies and formals, when this is not even the end of their schooling.

They come back and then start university (just an extension of high school really).

Sure it is good to celebrate achievements in life. But the excesses of these celebrations today I think are just too much.

Great for those kids with rich parents, etc. But it is an awful time for those who just cannot afford to do what is expected these days.

Yes, I think I am the "Scrooge" of Schoolies. Bar Humbug!!!!

I agree with you on some points Halv0. The expense of a Yr12 formal can be over the top. I know I was at one last week. But the businesses that make a living out of these things are partly to blame. They put the prices up on hairdos and outfits and car hires etc for these things. Much like weddings where venues and services suddenly go up when the word wedding is mentioned.

I do think it's important to mark special occasions in life and it is lovely to see parents attending and celebrating with their kids. Photographs are taken which become mementos and they have a few old time dances with their kids. This is a tradition being lost sadly.

True many come back to uni but just as many don't and this is their last hoorah. For many it's the first opportunity to dress up formally and been seen as adults.

Unfortunately commercialism gets hold of all human celebrations and ruins them. sigh

Halvo if I had known at the beginning of the 'Formal Year' what I knew at the end - I would ban ALL formals!! It is a rip off and completely over the top. My daughter did the whole dress (stress), outfit, car, shoes (2 prs), professional make up (and the 'trial' make up - $50), hair extensions (she has long hair confused ) dinner ($90) at top hotel, and I paid for her dress and shoes I think but she had a good part time job and paid for the rest. Her boyfriends brother had a Merc that they used.

But, my point is, there would be a lot of parents struggling to 'keep up with the Joneses???' and I felt sorry for any kids who weren't able to do the whole kit and kaboodle. sigh

I would have been happier to hire a hall, DJ, bbq, buy a 'nice dress' one that she would wear out again than go thru all the other pallaver.

A lot of kids in that year are taking driving lessons, driving tests, after 12 mths of driving with parents, looking maybe to buy a first car, heading off to uni - and I just thought that money could have been put to better use?? professor

I went to the Hotel where my daughter had her formal and - at my suggestion so did other parents! We got dolled up for a big night out - some of the parents just showed up at the entrance to the hotel in shorts and thongs. dunno No way, after 12 mths of stress and then they look like movie stars - I was gonna have a piece of the action for a couple of hours! wine

Oh and then there was the professional fotos blues

Thank God that is all over, I have told her if she is thinking of getting married - then elope please, I really won't mind!

When I finished High School, the school organised a Dinner Dance for all leaving students and partners (if they had any). It was held at another High School because they had an auditorium. The school paid for every thing, except it was no alcohol. Just after the main meal, my partner and I ducked down to the local to grab a bottle to help us relax. It was so bloody formal with the speeches from the Headmaster, Deputy Headmaster, Science Master, Sports Master, Subject Masters, Male School Captain, Female School Captain, P & C President, Sudent Council President........

Anyway, when we got back, about 20 cop cars were there with lights flashing. So we went into town and had a great night out. Never did hear what happened.doh Oddly enough, the place we went to got demolished early the next year and on and off I worked on the construction for the next 3 years.

Wow Wash, and you remember it... I am impressed.. grin

My first sons formal was a three event... one at the college, then a celebratory mass, and then the big night..

Yes, it cost a fair bit to hire suits.. (for the both of them, I had both at college, so younger bro attended too)

and then there was the celebratory going away... ( to the snow for a holiday for him) and then there was a fairly big pressie for him from me... to congratulate him for doing well..

When the youngest finished and graduated.. all he wanted was a night out after the speeches... and he was happy...

I think it is great to acknowledge their achievements.. and no... it was not the end of school.. for either of them.. one went to Tafe and one to Uni... and the mr who attended uni, was there til he was 27.. so I am glad that I bought them bribes thru out.. their learning years... I bribed them with BMX frames, special whatevers.. after every exam... and

yes, expensive, but really worth it... yay

Newlife08: It's here again - the Gold Coast has been invaded by 30,000 hyped up, slightly drunk over stimulated, crazy 17yo!!

Gotta love em. I survived it as a parent a couple of years ago, no dramas, thank god.

Have to say I was freaked out until she got back safe and sound.

What's your experiences, memories of your Schoolies?? Went to school in UK too long ago when we didn't have such a thing, probably just as well

Scary stuff, my daughter will go to schoolies next year, every parents nightmare.

I felt the same Kristia and I was very relieved when she came back unscathed! I just had to put it out of my mind and trust her to do the right thing - for herself and her friends.

Think they had a pretty tame time to be honest, stayed away from excess drink and she hates the idea of drugs so thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up

Old Timers hitting in. Our high school started 49 years ago. Okay, I started 49 years ago at the start of the high school. Facebook has a lot of stuff about celebrating it and one of the guys downloaded the list of attendees.

As my children were the recipiants of Child Support at those times, I was not involved/invited to share in their experiences. Did manage to watch my daughter enter her formal (she did let me know about it) but did not receive anything about my son's formal.
