Seems to cause enough controversy with his fictional writings, just finished reading the ”Lost Symbols.” Its on the edge of real and not real, I can see why he bothers so many people. Has anyone read any of his books and if you have what is your opinion, do his books hold enough entertainment value?

I find his books entertaining, which is why they are read by so many people. They hide between fantasy and fact... it's a fine line. I guess the problem for many is they do not research and find out what is fact or fiction.

However, when I watched the movie for the Elephant Man... it was the same. Based on fact, but so loosely that it was hardly plausible. I found that disappointing.

Well hello Pumpkin kiss How was your trip and the lucky man who got the pleasure of your company?

Books are always better than the movies. If you haven’t read “ lost symbols “ it is definitely worth reading.

Hello Muffin... I am well. My trip was wonderful. And my 'friend' is also wonderful. He will be in Australia in 10 days. smile

I agree with the fact that the books are always better than the movies. I find movies entertaining , but they often distort the story because of time restrictions.

Oh come now ... the trip to Ireland rocked. I went to the opera house in Cork and saw "Kiss of the Spider Woman"... I went to Ballycotton, Blarney wool mills, Blarney Castle, Cobh...so many places. I met some wonderful people and had a lovely time. ( Is that enough 'goss'?)

Thanks LiLee, but I just returned from my second trip over that way this year. So, the flight was NOT something I looked forward to. I love the UK and Ireland, but the flight is horrendous.

The new friend? um... Well yes, I guess. I have been chatting to him for ages. I am looking forward to him arriving in about ten days... at least it wasn't me on the flight this time. laugh

Ajax isn't jealous... he was quite sincere when he wished me well. I would wish him well if things were reversed.

I find his books very good entertainment. And with so many movies, there is only so much that can be compressed into the 2 hours.

I can understand people being bothered by his interpretations of symbols and symbolic items. Some times they stretch ones standard beliefs.

Good example is "The Last Supper" where Jesus has a beard (married Jewish men of the time wore beards) and the disciple next to him is the only one not with a beard. And they are leaning into each other. It has been suggested in Brown's books (and a lot of other books over the years) is that Jesus married Mary Magdalene.

A lot of books (and a few about the Knights Templar) suggest that Mary Magdalene and child were taken to France by Jesus' brother (Peter?). It has even been suggested that the French Pope ordered the massacre of the Huegenouts(?) in southern France to eliminate any possible decendants. And the Knights Templar were arrested, tortured and killed (usually burnt at the stake) for not revealing enough of what they knew and the religious "treasures" they had. Many storys refer to the church in Roslyn, Scotland as the last Knight Templar outpost.

Then one asks why the Vatican strictly limits access to certain parts of its library vaults.

My niece has been living with an Irish guy for a few years now. He loves her children as if they were his own, and they love him too. I have met a few over the years and they seem okay. This one I have gotten to know and he is a great guy. Had to tell him that the kids were not to call him "Uncle Ernie" (thing from rock opera Tommy). And speaks a bit funny, especially after a few drinks.laugh cheers

Abi, hope it goes well for you.

And don't forget that there are enough people here who want to know how good he is for you.

The philosophy of Christianity was to recruit people through a more easy system of belief. Jesus never washed his hands before sharing a meal nor wore a beard, by which he was criticized for, he also said it was alright to eat pork.

Jesus is portayed as having a beard. If, on the otherhand, you are correct and he wwas criticised for not having a beard, that would suggest he was a married man.

The eating of pork, and being clean shaven, may have come around from his time in India. Eating pork is very odd because even the Arabs will not touch it.

Washing hands before eating was good when water was plentiful and did not become a common practise in many countries until it was realised that dirty hands may transmit diseases or something else. Then again, in the Middle Ages the water was so polluted it made matters worse.

The Cornish pastie was invented for that reason. The tin miners would be down in the mines all day, including their mealbreak. There is a lot of arsenic around tin (and gold) and the miners would hold the pastie by the thick crust and eat all but that bit of crust.

Thank you, Wash. He is a lovely guy. I have been to Ireland twice this year...I have met his family and friends. I believe I am throwing him in the deep end in a weeks time. There is a party at my home for my daughter's 21st and he has to meet the whole family, including my foster parents. Trial by fire perhaps.
