So this is one of my generalizations I've come up with recently.

I joined a gym a couple of months ago and I've been going regularly and eating a fairly strict diet in an effort to get in better shape. I have no illusions about my main motivation here - I want to make myself more desirable to women. The health benefits are great also but I know it's really vanity at the end of the day.

Although recently I've been wondering if I'm placing to much emphasis on this. And the reason why is this.

At the gym I go to guys outnumber the girls about 2 to 1 and only a minority of the women that go train regularly or with any intensity.
Now I reckon that a lot of the guys have the same motivation as me, but the women I can't speak for. I have no sisters - Womens motivations are a total mystery to me a lot of the time.

It got me thinking, what do women tend get really into that men in general aren't bothered with or do half-heartedly- Style and Fashion.

Now I could be wrong here- cue protests from fahionistas who will tell me fashion is a higher art form - but a lot of womens fashion, style and beauty stuff is motivated by vanity and wanting to appear desirable. Just the same as Men and working out. I'm sure there's some competitive thing that goes on with women and fashion but I'm mostly oblivious to and there certainly also a competitive element in working out whether it's with yourself or someone else.

And so, in general
"Women care as much about body and physique as men care about style and fashion"

Could both Men and Women be collectively misguided about what the opposite gender care more about?
Feel free to chime in with your 2c and answer to any of these questions below.

Women of CS. What is a bigger turn on - A man who is stylish and dresses with impeccable taste or a the man in a vest who is obviously toned and in great shape? (fashion people hate vests for some reason)

Men of CS. What is a bigger turn on - A woman in a vest who is obviously toned and in great shape or the woman who is stylish and dresses with impeccable taste?

I would also love to hear from women who train hard and often, what motivates them? and whether they feel that this interest is something a lot of women can't relate to? And if you're a fella who has a passion for fashion - Does it not bother you that the majority of men either don't care or don't have a bull's notion how dress with style?

Fair play to anyone who goes to the gym or trains. You can never tell where someone else is with their training. They could be out of hospital, after a birth or an injury. The high intensity theory is being challenged now if you want to gain muscle mass. Less is more.

I used to train for about an hour 6 days a week with weights but then I changed to 4 days a week doing about half the sets and reps but with 15% more weight. The results are amazing. This video captures some of the theory. High intensity can get you ripped but it's wasting a lot of energy, time and puts you at risk of fatigue and injury. Good luck and keep it up. I posted this on Pedro's Weight Watchers thread but I think it applies here too.

tinyfangs: Scruffy look can be quite appealing, don't underestimate the power of looking like a hunter who has crawled through the undergrowth

I'd be put off by an overly 'fashion' orientaded male. Would reek for me of 'system' and conformist, but same does go for overly body orientated types. A guy who just downs his protein shakes morning noon and evening while bursting out of top sizes, all for the sake of 'muscle', I personally find quite worrying/insecurity issues ladden, but both are rare extremes, I'd say.

Looking like a hunter is one thing, looking like you'd woken up under a park bench, the only thing you'd been hunting was beer and women the night before. Not an appealing look laugh

I have to admit I don't really have any fashion sense either - I mean I'll make an effort for a night out or a special occasion but most of the time it's jeans, t-shirt, jumper/hoodie.

I really think that if Gok came to Ireland he'd have a field day.

thumbs up

I have never cared for looks, but attitude I guess is one of the words. The right attitude, the right set of mind, and the rest falls into place from there. I'd not have issues with someone being majorly overweight for example due to looks, but the attitude of the mind. A male should wish to stay fit, to me it is a natural conclusion any man should come to. There are also conclusions females should come to, and handbag collections are not one of those conlcusions in my view, among various other things.

"Women care as much about body and physique as men care about style and fashion"

I think you are onto something there. I'm not into pretty boys myself although I like my man to be groomed. dunno

I like a "cuddly" man in a buttoned shirt and jeans and wouldn't be too gone on someone with a bodybuilder's physique in a tee and some kind of fashionable skinny jeans.

I go to the gym for health reasons (keep my back in check) but not because I like it. I do like dancing though.

When I meet someone there is in rare cases the "Ugh, that's not going to happen", but in most cases I pay someone a second look after talking to them and finding something interesting in there. handshake

Best of luck in getting into the shape you want Dave. wine
