I wasn't sure if he was who Tiny meant until she mentioned his tower falling and his one flaming eye. This could mean that either she has a very forgiving nature or is more likely to side with the villain as long as he is a powerful figure confused I never got the impression Sauron was good looking or even vaguely sympathetic

Sauron is the main bad guy, represented in the films as a single flaming eye. The white wizard you're thinking of was Saruman (played by Christopher Lee)

LadyBlackAdder: I am not as familiar with Tolkien's world as you obviously are but it was always my understanding that Sauron represented the fallen angel who became Satan.

No, that is Melkor you are thinking of, later to be known as Morgoth.

Sauron was indeed Mairon, the Admired, one of the Ainur to serve under Aulë, one of the Valars to have entered EA. He ended changing sides to follow Melkor, but I had a huge discussion on this in the past with Tolkien experts, putting forth my theory that Sauron may just tried to force Eru's hand, or to at least bring order to the creation. Many have big issues wrapping their minds around this, but looking at what Tolkien did write about the history, it can not fully be dismissed as a possibility.

Melkor is the 'villain', I'd say also Saruman, both of those characters are ruled by greed and a selfish lust for power.
Sauron never displayed any of that. Even when he held the rule, he never asked to be worshipped. He just sought to bring order to a creation that knew chaos due to Melkor's interferance, and from that actually being a fact - it is just a small step to think he maybe also tried to force Eru's hand, or had lost at least all faith in Eru, for Eru had not stopped Melkor when he began to play a different tune.

Fascinating stuff.

By that time, yes, although even that could be debated.. but definitely before, Sauron had a human form, and he did seduce the elves even, that's how they ended with one of their rings.

Why hair, Jamie? I mean I know from my dad that he suffered from sunburns, and when it was cold he suffered from that too, and apparently it did hurt more hitting the head, or at least going by my memories of him cussing whenever it happened.. uh oh but elsewise it should not matter, should it?

I have come across a few males who really are upset about being bald, but what difference does it truly make? Imagine a woman who'd only fall in love with you if you had hair, and I am sure such do exist - so yes, theoretically it may limits available opportunities - but then again.. who wants to be loved for their appearance?
Anyone very handsome or pretty in truth needs to fear that their physical attractiveness is the number 1 trigger that leads others to them, and that in turn has to create worries, as looks can be destroyed by accidents and illness, not to mention the aging process.
We want to be loved for who we are, not what we look like :)

Christopher Reeve was lucky, as it is clear his wife did not love just the superman image, and their story still touches me deeply, and this is what we all should really wish for, captured in this simple beautiful quote by Dana Reeve:

"I still love you no matter what. You are still you."

Currently just wishing my ceiling only needs one coat, looks ok in the dark, frigging day light will tell.
Wish I had the money to pay someone to do up my house.
Wish for one night, just one long sensual night with George Cloony.
