SoonerGal: I'm living in the wrong part of the world that's pretty impressive
yes, the police have had to deal with drunks with shotguns before, even been shot at. Usually they settle it by sayin something like, - Hey, stop this nonesence and come down to the station and lets have a cup of coffee...
Sounds a lot like our ruby ridge and Waco unnecessary law enforcement massacres. Any explanation as to why the urgency for the police to rush in? We're others known to be in danger?

I think they didnt have to shoot him, he was just stoned mental case. He had a shotgun but very little ammo and was not real threat to others. I think they could have waited him out

That's sad. In the ruby ridge case in Idaho, law enforcement without question, shot a young boy in the back as he was retreating, and he wasn't carrying anything to begin with that could harm others. Law enforcement later shot his mother in the back and she was only holding her 10 month old child. Others were also shot dead at ruby ridge by law enforcement. None we're threatening the law enforcement that murdered these people that I recall. Crazy world we live in.

It is the first time someone has been killed in an armed police operation in Iceland, officials say.
Tear gas canisters were fired through the windows in an attempt to subdue the 59-year-old, who lived in the east of the capital, Reykjavik.
When this failed he was shot after firing at police entering the building. Between 15 and 20 officers took part.
Back-up was provided by special forces.
The tear gas was used when the man, who has not been named, failed to respond to police attempts to contact him and continued shooting.
When they entered the apartment, two members of the special forces were injured by shotgun fire - one in the face, the other in the hand.
