Glitch101: Seems it's the norm in China.

case of an 8 year old Chinese boy stripped and beaten publicly in today's paper too,.
That’s a good example why it should be banned all together. thumbs up

LiLee: Really, You have a law there epirb?

This situation is where I see a little whack to be warranted. Every parent knows there is no reasoning with a stubborn toddler and sometimes they just need to be moved along.

I agree with your comments also Halvo, sensible.

As AA Points out there is a fine line tho but I think most loving parents know the limits and would not intentionally harm their children much less attempt to instill fear in them.

Acceptable parenting methods have changed considerable in the last 50 years and many more mature people here would probably remember violence from a father or even a mother was considered acceptable when they were kids. I wasn't that long ago when domestic violence was also deemed the right of the husband but no longer.

I am just concerned that parents may be loosing the right to make informed decisions about disciplining their kids and then getting blamed for unruly children later down the track.

Seems to be leading to a no win situation.

Those laws are here in Australia as well and have been for a long time.

I agree with AA about "violence" towards children. I deplore violence. Most especially the cowards that pick fights then have several coward mates jump in.

There is a line between smacking a child and being violent.

How many times have you heard a parent say to a screaming child "You won't get an icrecream if you don't stop?" Great life lesson there. Do something people don't like and you will be rewarded with something special.

If you deprive a child of the phone, iPhone, Ipad, internet or going out you are mentally abusing the child because you depriving them of social interaction.

If your child misbehaves this next fortnight, do you deprive that child of Xmas presents?

"Yes, Officer, I have explained many times to little Johnny that lighting matches could start a fire. I know our home burnt to the ground but this may just be the lesson he needs."

Not much has changed over the years- the poorly educated towns around qld still bash the living daylights out of their kids.

LiLee: A news story today is about smacking kids. According to the news story the UN wants to ban violence against kids.

Fair call, but is a parent smacking a child in the name of discipline violence against kids?

Should teachers be forced to report any knowledge of smacking of children by parents to aurthorities?

What other methods of discipline have been successful for you if your a parent?

Thoughts?

I do not agree with smacking .... Violence is violence no matter the justifiable degree ...

There are more effective ways for an adult to get a point across to a child ... Time Out, Privileges Removed, Playtime shortened etc ...

Personally I am against hitting any child for any reason ...

In one of the books I read it said it was as logical hitting a child as hitting a dog for barking. dunno

I never had a problem with a screaming child, if he wanted an icecream I’d buy him an icecream and myself a double while I was at it. laugh
