gold71: We have these rats called White tailed rats, some can be as big as a cat, they are native but carry a disease called Leptospirosis which can kill an 18 year old.
I've had it and it nearly topped me, was in a ice bath with a drip and a temp of 42, not pretty.

I to had Leptospirosis, got it from cows in NZ, effects the liver, all cows carry it.

A lot of work has been done on whats predating our birds . Ferrets and stoats are the worst by a long way . Rats and possums handle the tree nesting birds . I have see infra red clips of possums raiding bird nests .

I had a ginger Tomcat that loved killing rabbits, he must have killed over 100 in about a month - also killed a number of rats and mice. Cats are useful when they do this - not all killing is bad.

Well cats carry toxoplasmosis and when rats are infected with it there
attracted to cats.
Cats are the host but cats can develop antibodies and stop been carriers.
This organism affects nervous system and physical bodily functions but I think it can be more detrimental to other mammals including mans best friend.I like cats though.
