Went to see the new Hobbit movie over the weekend. I enjoyed it but, like the last one, there was whole bunch of stuff in it that I couldn't remember from the book. Who thinks this extra stuff is ok and who thinks not. I'd like to hear from both people who have read the book and those who haven't.

I'm still wondering if they will release a special edition where everything that wasn't in the book gets taken out leaving one single 2 hour film??

I haven't seen it yet, and it has been a very long time since I read the hobbit, or the lord of the rings.

The problem I find with translating any book into a movie is that, in most cases, they have to condense an entire book into a couple of hours, (though perhaps the opposite is true for the Hobbit) also, you are at the mercy of the directors vision, then there is the casting, if the actors are wrong it ruins everything, and then there is the actors interpretation of the characters, on top of that, you have the studios demanding results and happy endings.

In fact when you think of it, translating any book into a movie is beset with pitfalls.

Over all I would say Jackson got it right with the Lord of the Rings, I will have to wait to see if he also gets it right with the Hobbit.

I had read The Lord of the Rings 7 times before I was 20, and when the movies came out I boykotted them for a long time. Eventually I watched them and while I know Jackson added things, and Legolas can never be matched on screen, impossible, and Gimly was NEVER laughing stock in the books like he is done up in the movies - I nonetheless enjoyed the trilogy. Same goes for the first Hobbit movie, enjoyed that one as well, have not seen the 2nd one yet but am pretty sure I will be fine with it.

Sad to me is more that a lot of people will never read the books, or only after having watched the movies, so they will never be able to truly create their own version of Middle Earth in their minds, but then again.. at least this way Tolkien's amazing work is still very much alive, to me a master piece in many many ways thumbs up

Read the books and seen all the movies sofar. Seen the new one last weekend. I really enjoyed it too. The problem Jackson had with this trilogy is he had to make 3 films from one book. There was always going to be some padding and artistic licence, but as long as it fits into the original story and it makes a good movies then it's OK IMO.

It does not seem there are many gamers (not gamblers!) on this forum, but for any Tolkien fans I'd advise to maybe look up Lord of the Rings Online. It is a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game) and it is free to play (just a huge download now blues). I love it, even though of course there also has been freedom taken with the original story, but still it is a joy to ride through Middle Earth, meet Tom Bombadil, explore Moria and heaps more heart wings

I read Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit as a teen when they came out. I like the former but found The Hobbit by far not as good. Watched all the LOTR movies, but didn't bother with The Hobbit yet. wave

I think they were always going to take some license with the movies...to stretch 3 movies each out of 4 books was no mean accomplishmentthumbs up
