i have been invited to a mexican christmas eve party! (my friend's partner is from mexico and they finally got through all the immigration stuff and are married this year and living in canada)
any suggestions for me?...not familiar with mexican christmas eve..
(painting red and green dots on some maracas tomorrow to ribbon tie to a bottle of wine for the host, and a wee red and green sombrero for my other friend's doggie...)

No way! For Christmas.
Christmas Eve is what we do celebrate.
Some go to Church others do not and after that a late dinner is served.
Most families would exchange presents, we do not.
You are not supposed to bring anything when you are invited but some table wine would be appreciated or some alcohol but you need to know the people well enough to know about their habits. Some “botanas” like good cheese, olives, pickled mushrooms or so would be appreciated.
Also you could bring a dish to share if you are close to the family, just make sure your dish will do well among all the many dishes at the gathering. Mexican cuisine is very good and diverse.

Glatlol: In my family Christmas has nothing to do with religion. It is about spending time together, chatting, laughing, eating and drinking to much and spoiling the children. I love it.

RobbieM: Assuming your a Christian, and you believe the old flanet that is the bible, you might also like to vheck for the details of where thr calendar date format changed.
So assuming you believe In a certain someones birthday, you might like tonadd the Easter Bunny to your diary, and add "Black Friday", which is more modern but just as needed, because the corporations do need a nice structure to thick members of the public to buy, mostly complete crap (That you don't need).
What with a dizzy blonde on Fox being that dumb to believe Father Xmas was white (wasn't Saint Nicholas from Turkey???) and obviously Jesus was white (of course, everyone in the middle east is white, there not Arabic, and brown) we all have to be officially stupid enough to believe any old rubbish that's broadcast, and most importantly buy into the idea that you must buy a whole load of crap, to meet corporations advertising expectations.
Christmas used to be a religious holiday, where is you didn't believe in a concocted religion, you had a sharp sword inserted into you bottom. Now if you are a free thinker, and see right through the old rubbish that was used to terrorise people for thousands of years, you are now challenged to see if you can hold out from buying a crappy plastic tree and throwing crappy decorations on it.
Of course, if you don't there is obviously something wrong with you! And remember, it's always important to look down on others who are less fortunate than yourself. I normally find this aspect of religion the most repulsive.
How about treating your fellow man fairly, and decently all year round, not just for a holiday period, while you are off work, too full of food, and alcohol to pick a fight with a stranger.
My Xmas will be spent protecting a family who are being threatened by messages, while the police are doing their forensics, while the scumbags concerned have told the family concerned, " next time we are coming back with knives, and were starting in the bedrooms". Recently they beat up the 17 year old teenager, on his way to school.
So this year, they will be getting a very special Xmas welcome from me, as you would expect. Just a lovely example of how charitable people are at this time of the year, and how much humanity is going to be shared, by people who probably believe in Father Xmas, the Easter Bunny, and democracy.
