A book I'm reading at present touched on the topic of how, with music being readily available on the net, CDs will most likely go down the road of vinyl records and be phased out.

It also touched upon the visual appeal of record jackets, CD covers, and the videos and performances of the artists themselves.

How much do you think your purchase of music is affected by this visual appeal?

After all, we never got to see Mozart or Beethoven perform and in bygone days, many records were in plain paper sleeves.

Do you download music by artists that you are not familiar with?

Sorry Serene, this is one area that I am all for the new technology - Mp3 music - I love it that I can rip my cd's using window media, convert to mp3, transfer my music to a flash stick and shove it in the usb of my car stereo unit or my dvd player (which goes through my surround sound)

It saves wear and tear on my cd's, because unlike my vinyls - I must have played frizzbie with them - are scratched and distorted...-

Hi Sassie, can't agree more wine

However, aside from transferring music from CDs, are you into downloading music directly from sites?

In effect, negating the need to purchase a CD in the first place?

This way, one can also choose individual songs rather than a whole album conversing

Hi Serene wave

I haven't brought a CD for ages. I supose they will be phased out. I did used to love all the extra info and pictures that used to come with records and some CD's.

I tend to listen to songs online on youtube more than purchase songs these days.

In regard to only buying indiviual songs, sometimes I liked another song on albums better than the hit single from that album.

Times, they are achanging buddies

Hi Serene, I often download a song I like, then later maybe a whole album from the same artist. I store all my music in my notebook, mobile phone and on flash drive for the car. I even have an App on my phone called Sound Hound that can tell me what piece of music is playing when I don't know the artist.

Absolutely and I wonder whether CDs will become collectors' items like vinyl records did conversing

Yes it is a whole new world, but a few years ago I got some great albums - yes those big vinyl things - for a dollar each at a garage sale!

Got some Stones, Beatles, Queen, and other classics and I just love looking at the album covers and the info that comes inside sometime?

Up until recently I had a 'record player' and loved dragging out a couple of albums, even some classic stuff, and just listening to them, glass of wine, reading the cover back to back. Old school.

But I have never had that affinity with CD's? They are just too small!

Yep today we are spoilt for choice.

It's so easy, I have about 6Gb of music and that is only 20% of my phone storage. I share flash drives with my daughter when I download music for her. All nice and simple and convenient.

Interesting comments there Newie thumbs up

I guess CDs were paving the way in a sense, their presentation was never as alluring as records conversing

And now we are accessing music without any packaging at all, similar to the concept of ebooks.

too fast for me; in 1986 a girl I was dating showed me this new music format "CD audio" I thought to myself "I must buy one of these" I don't get in a hurry about anything and bought my first audio CD in 2011...now your saying they are obsolete? or someone said...I was told the other day I must be the only person in Australia that doesn't own a mobile phone, but I don't want to rush into it...(and my mom doesnt have one)

Hi Newie,

Music connoisseurs still love the original sounds from vinyl.

That is very true Kauri, I even love the crackles you get on the vinyl!

I have spoken to people at garage sales, car boots that have collected literally thousands of LP's - one day they will be worth plenty - or nothing sigh

Oh yes, pardon me, yes well back in the late 1970's I shared a flat with a computer technician and I leaned all about PC's..I remember using his computer the 1st IBM PC, it had two 5 1/4 inch floppy disks, no hard disk, no CD and certainly no USB dagnabit...but PC's are the only thing I think worthwhile in this internet age of fast food and one night stands...I have used a mobile/cell phone lastly in 2002 (a work phone) An annoying device, they kept ringing me up and telling me to do stuff.
