Ccincy: What was so stupid on the counselors part she keep asking me questions instead of the patient.
I don’t think that’s a bad thing- they need to know as much about the person as possible.

AgentAjax: Definitely do the research, the best ones are the ones that have been around for a while and are recommended by word of mouth instead of flashy adverts. As for family support, it depends, family unit in USA slightly differs from family in Australia and as we slightly differ from UK.

so true - and it goes for family in Canada too.

Brigantia: Hi Riz

Sadly, that is a much-too-common event you have related there. I can imagine completely your wife's scenario.

In my opinion, the problem comes from too many unqualified and "un-lived" people getting a counselling degree (or not) and setting themselves up in practice. The mind and its disorders - ranging from something relatively mild like low-range anxiety or depression can be very easily misdiagnosed by an unprofessional and appointment the wrong type of therapy. Which can sometimes be very detrimental to the patient.

I work for a company that works closely with the New York Department of Mental Health, and we work toward assisting troubled children, veterans and other individuals who need some assistance in life - whether financial or emotional. I have recently undertaking seminars on anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, Panic Attacks/Disorders, schizophrenia, and depression and it is amazing how many of the symptoms of these wide-ranging conditions overlap. It is not until a qualified mental health professional/doctor diagnoses EXACTLY what the position is (if any, because often there really is not anything amiss, the patient just needs someone to talk to and nothing else), that the CORRECT treatment can be given.

It sounds to me like your first wife unfortunately came across someone who maybe wanted to try and look for something that really was not there at all. I am not surprised she suffered a little depression given what she went through; and she probably just needed some temporary support and minor medication (maybe) and nothing further.

Thank you for understanding, and I agree, her stress and anxiety were just that, which had made her feel depressed, a normal result for the circumstances she had endured.

I don't blame therapy for what happened to her, as Jac seems to be trying to make me say, but I do blame a quack therapist, who completely misdiagnosed my wife, and mistreated her, resulting in her now being a manic depressive and having to take strong medication for the rest of her life, it's all so very wrong in my opinion.

jac379: What do the terms 'counselling' and/or 'therapy' mean to you?

Do you have experience of counselling and/or therapies?

Under what circumstances would you consider counselling and/or therapies?

I think there are still a lot of people who believe there is a stigma associated with seeking help in the way of counselling or therapy. There have been measures put in place in recent years to combat that but still some work to do.

There is no shame in looking for assistance in times of, say, bereavement, stress at work, divorce, money problems, etc. There is an inclination to think that what is huge to the person concerned may be considered small-fry to others and also the inability to cope, we often believe, makes us appear weaker people.

No one person can deal with everything that life sometimes throws at us. In fact, I am convinced it shows a stronger person for being level-headed about what can, or can't, be coped with and it takes a pro-active person to take that forward.

For those who need to seek help - do it! It could be just what's needed to turn your life around......

For those that think counseling/therapy is for the weak...

It's not at all unusual for professional athletes to see sports psychologists. I know of a professional fighter that went to one to manage fears that he felt were limiting his performance. He went on to become a long standing champion. Another fighter, Mike Tyson openly talks about his need to fight being relating to being bullied as a child. He says he learned to fight so no one could ever do that to him again. He and Evander's ear both might have had better lives if Mike had gotten a little help along the way.

There's strength in getting the things you need

to have the life you want.

Psychology is a long and arduous training course, unlike counseling which anyone can profess to be an expert in with only a 2:2 Bsc, or even no qualifications

.The training and licensing of clinical psychologists ranges from 4 year undergraduate degree plus a 4 to 6 year doctorate program.

Most programs in the U.S. are PhD programs that have a strong focus on research and are typically housed in universities.

There are fewer programs resulting in a PsyD (doctor of psychology), many of which are in private schools and have a greater focus on treatment. There are more students enrolled in PsyD programs overall so that both degrees are about 50/50 in terms of number of students. In the U.K., those training to be clinical psychologists have to complete a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (D.Clin.Psych.), which is a practitioner doctorate with both clinical and research components. This is a three-year full-time salaried program sponsored by the National Health Service (NHS) and based in universities and the NHS.

In the U.S., Canada and the U.K the practice of clinical psychology requires a license. Although every state is somewhat different in terms of requirements and licenses, there are three common elements—a degree from an approved educational program, a minimum amount of supervised clinical experience, and passing an examination. Most states also require a certain number of continuing education credits per year in order to renew a license, which can be obtained though various means, such as taking audited classes and attending workshops.
