All the better, maybe peer pressure is the trigger to stop. After all,
it was probably peer pressure that causes us to start in the first place.

Wish there was presure to stop, I quit this time last year after trying to quit for 7 years! There was more pressure to smoke than quit, but then most people still smoke in Cyprus, the smoking ban in restaurants/pubs has been almost completely abandoned, meaning that I passive smoke if I go out which keeps cravings alive, I also get migrains when I passive smoke now, which puts me off going out. I would prefer it if smokers were alienated, I think it would mean less smokers, and better health in general.

It's a good stigma. What I don't like is how the elite goes hell for leather on the vice of smoking but preaches tolerance towards the sin of gluttony. Fat-acceptance whilst hating on smokers is hypocritical bull.

I think it's testament to the fact that there's been a very effective education campaign against tobacco which stresses the dangers of it. And of course, who likes second hand smoke? It's really, really nasty. I think there's been a combination of things there that has brought about the belief that tobacco doesn't do a whole lot more than get people hooked, cause cancer, stink, etc.

There's considerable ostracizing of smokers. Cigarettes are on their way out, clearly. It's close to a done deal.

Yes, we must broaden the stigma campaign to include anyone who varies from the "ideal" in any way. To be fair, intolerance must be universal.

I don't care if people smoke, as long as it's not someone I care about.

Smoking serves a useful social and evolutionary function by tweaking the process of natural selection to target individuals prone to addictive behavior.

However, due to latency, it would be more effective in this role if either smoking behavior were encouraged at an earlier age, or accelerating substances were introduced into the tobacco to enhance its effects.

Or both.

I smoke. Not allowed inside the home no matter what. I don't even own an ashtray. Since I have a lot of drive time for almost everything, the car is free game with at least one window opened a reasonable crack no matter what the temperatures or weather. I can tell some days opening the door on that too.

There is no real excuse for me starting, not even so-called "peer pressure". The bottom line is that I did and still do.

Worse still, is that I have no desire to quit and not sure if I ever will. Peer pressure wasn't the reason for starting and it won't be a reason for stopping either. I think about it from time to time. I can walk into a building and tell if smoking takes place inside. Sometimes, I can walk into a smoking area outside and the scent is unmistakable.
