Malwarebytes is free and very good at removing nasties.
Spybot search and destroy is free and also very good at getting rid of spyware.
Microsoft Security Essentials works pretty seamlessly with windows(obviously) and doesn't cause as many issues as other security software sometimes does.

Amongst the paid ones I'd recommend kaspersky.

Although really the best internet security is good practice.

Don't let your browser remember your password.
Keep your OS and any other software you use updated with the latest patches.
Don't install software unless you know it is safe.
Have different passwords for different accounts.
Use a combination of numbers, letters and special characters in passwords.
Log in as guest and avoid using an administrator account as much as possible.
Change security questions for email and social media accounts to things that no one would ever know or use an answer that don't make sense. e.g.
Q What was the name of your first pet?
A David Beckham
