beer could always be sold on. having read the article before though i know its not enough beer, plus will lose value being secondhand. more beer and i would. doubt my local newsagent would be impressed with me offering him a a 12 pack? for a pack o cigs tho. or a tinnie for a newspaper.

neither being a regular drinker, nor a purchaser of pre rolled cigs, not sure on equivalency.

I can see why they would do it too. It really pisses me off when people say "Don't give them money, they'll only spend it on drink or drugs".

Well if I had to sleep on the streets in the cold, wet, dirty conditions I would get pissed too!

I don't think that's true to be honest.
I think if you were on the streets and you got money you'd spend it on food or on a place to stay.
It's the nature of addiction that addicts put their drug ahead of everything else, including food, warmth and personal safety.

(this doesn't mean that I don't feel sorry for them by the way!)

It's definitely not an ideal situation but at least he is earning his booze. Working for food and board was a big thing up until the last 50 years.
I'm a big believer in a fair days pay for a fair days work. The minimum wage is too low.

Well they do buy food too. You see them buying sandwiches. But place to stay? How much is rent where you love Snow?laugh

And how much do you think they can beg in a day? And even if they did beg enough hotels and B&B's wont take them. And Dublin hostels are not safe places......they get robbed, assaulted or worse. It's not as simple as you're putting it.

That's true about the hostels being dangerous.

There is an old American saying however that goes something like this; A poor man, unless he's an alcoholic, will spend his last dollar on food.

There is no doubt addiction is a huge reason people are on the streets. And to expect those people to give up their vice while homeless is asking far too much I think. We need far more services, halfway houses and drop in centres.

But not everyone on the street is there because of addiction issues. The downturn in the economy, family breakup, mental health, domestic violence, and the increase in rent while welfare is cut are just some of the other reasons.

I think mental health is the biggest problem for people on the streets. There's roarin' alcoholics can keep their council flat. The difference is the lads on the street, aside from the new ones, lots of them have mental problems.
