What do people think about the American admission that the so-called war in Iraq is not being, and cannot be, won? (I say so-called because only Congress can declare war for the Americans and they have not done that since December, 1941)
if you are speaking of mr. gates's appointment to the department of defense, if i recall correctly, he qualified the answer of not winning with not losing, either.
and he didn't say anything about it not being ABLE to be won, he said he looked forward to doing more research into the matter.
i haven't read the excerpts, i only listened to npr, so i might have missed some.
i guess it would depend upon what your idea of winning is. yes, we could wipe out the entire country...but what does that prove? is that 'winning'? or just a big fat loss?
You are certainly eager to take offense. I don't think this question could have been phrased more neutrally. There is not the least anti-Americanism involved, so I don't understand your response except that you are searching for an opportunity to get something off your chest. And referring to me as 'Mr. France' is funnier than you can know. I do not, and have never, represented or tried to represent France or French thought.
But make up their minds about what? They were fairly clear at the outset of this adventure, for example, that they opposed the invasion. As any friend might, they expressed this opinion clearly to their American ally.
Anthony Cordesman, a military analyst who holds the Arleigh A Burke Chair in Strategy at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, described it as "an elephant gives birth to a mouse".
"We wasted three years so what are we going to do, demand instant success now?" he said. "One of the problems we have here is having sent the bull in to liberate the china shop, we are now blaming the china shop for breaking the china."
It's about time they call it what it is, we where asked for help to free Iraq from a tyrannical regime, they said they wanted a change. Well, the change they wanted was only a different regime, not a democracy. and yes if they did not have American oil corporations there we would have just and replied "so you think you got problems".
we went there, and this truth was revealed but we did not, listenor see, it took a civil war after we claimed our independence from England to bring us together as a nation ( bad blood from that one still exists). So now media says its a Civil war so we should be polite neighbors and be civil and let them as a nation sort it out.
many will say this country and that country arre funding and support this factionand that...well, if our countrys history is accurate we had the same issues. So the weapons of today are more potent then back then, the population is much larger. so maybe the kill ratio as compred to back then is relatively the same...(maybe not)
although I still have not figured out how to return our boys and equipment home safely, cause, last man (Battalion) there is gonna be whacked by the factions inside Iraq those against our presence and those pissed that we are leaving.
yeah this 2 cup of coffee thought was brought to you by the mind a madman. your welcome
There's no possible way for us to win this, as it wasn't really a war...we can only "benefit" from it, but I feel that its also an unlikely outcome...given the current political climate in the USA, I feel that the citizens can only lose, and only the politicians will win...the average person will pay for his governments folly, I'm afraid...
Serious question here how many wars has france won, and how many lands did they claim as theirs, you know like French New Guinea??
I know you was on the winning side with us Americans back in the day of England and the Colonies. I think you chose the wrong side during our Civil War, I think anyway. I know you was in Veitnam long before you sucked us in there, was ya all in Korea too? I'm just curious when it comes to defending and starting then finishing something how the French"s win / loss record is.
Malcom said "I feel that the citizens can only lose, and only the politicians will win"
I would add and all corporations and industrial units who are involved in production of Millitalry supplies and weapons ...and all relevant products. Though on the other hand it helps to keep the level of unemployment up.
So you see...civilians are benefit from this "war", as well.
Well, D it is absolutely obvious, at least to the rest of the World that this *war* is an neverending story, extremely tragic and sad as it is for both sides.
I’m just wondering why American Government cannot admit it and leave Iraq?
Just an opinion
ps I wish Icarus will stay away from this thread, yeah
wow 75 percent of our military contracts are with a defense group totallyowned by the bin laden corporation.... aa for benefits yeah the list is quite interesting what countries now have business interests within Iraq. and that itself is causes unrest with the citizenry of Iraq, foriegn owned factories that are manufacturing the products needed to "rebuild" the country.
Damn, we are pissed at our govrnment for allowing foriegn manufactered products to flood our markets. Yeah foriegn Steel and auto manufacturers have really affected our economy, so I can relate to those citizen in Iraq whose factories and businesses are replaced by foriegn owned replacements.
Used to it was good to love your country...Now it seems its not so "hip" .... Im an American, Native, Proud, Served, And would do it all over again......Cant Do enough.....Pry my cold dead fingers off my gun American....Plain and simple....Thud
