Indeed , ....i think there are much more important things they could be spending their time on.....Typical frivolous government (schoolyard politicians for the most..!), Not to mention the Leader who is rolling in it

theD0CT0R: Australia was going to do the same a few years back. The Union Jack should go We all should have a different flag, stuff the Commonwealth.

All States in the Commonwealth of Australia have different flags including the Union Jack. The Territories don't.

From more than 30,000 designs submitted for the Australian Flag, the current one was selected in 1901 and gazetted in 1903, it was not given Royal assent and adopted as the definitive Australian flag until 1954 in the Flags Act 1953 (Act No. 1 of 1954). Thank Lizzie for that one.

Then there is some meaning behind the flag which most people do not know about.

-The Union Jack in the first quarter denoting Australia's historical links with Great Britain. Union Jack = the red cross of St George for England and Wales, the white saltire of St Andrew for Scotland and the red saltire of St Patrick to represent Ireland. Don't ignore the Australia's strong ties with Ireland and Scotland.

-The Southern Cross in the second quarter (also known as the top or head) and fourth quarter. Consists of five stars, the constellation of the Southern Cross is a significant navigational feature of the southern hemisphere, strongly places Australia geographically and has been associated with the continent since its earliest days, including the Eureka Stockade and now some unions.

-The Commonwealth Star or Star of Federation, central in the third quarter or lower hoist, has seven points to denote the six states and the combined territories of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Oddly enough, the USA State of Hawaii has the Union Jack in the first quarter.

And back to Commonwealth. Are you referring to the Commonwealth of Australia, the Commonwealth of Nations or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts?

Yes, but will that win them popularity votes ? By suggesting a new flag, they are hoping for advocates to believe in the cause and to instil that belief in others.

Probably about 3 times their estimate, as usual when Govts estimate things. It is sad that the many layers of Govt are not in contact with the real world.

When it was discussed in Australia last year, John Vaughan estimated it would cost tens of millions.

The Care Factor = 0

And as my Brothers would say "Not my country"

My point was that those "that want" will under-estimate the real cost.
