I posted this video on the say anything thread but it's so good I thought I'd create a thread about the underlying self esteem that affects us all.

Since these disabled people have done this, posed for marketing a new, broader standard, of perfectection, ....could you do that?

Would you pose then? Or is your self esteem disabled?

The human body is amazing, I have sculpted the body and face all my life.
We are all disabled, body, mind and soul and when we understand and accept this we become perfect.

i used to teach body casting...regardless of body type..there's this wonderful moment when one 'sees' themselves... i never got tired of watching the students' responses to 'their selves'...
and yes, i have posed in the past, and would pose again.

thumbs up How much does the social standard of beauty and perfection affect you NMP? Minimally, a great deal? I guess I mean, attention to health aside, how much time do concern or rate yourself in comparison to standards?

Yes, I would.

My dad was physically disabled since he was 19 years old. I never felt him as disabled in any way. He couldn´t have been more perfect.
I remember that I walked hand in hand with him when I was 8 years old and a few kids crossed our way and made jokes about him (the way he walked), and I felt them as disabled.

It´s hard for me to understand people who feel others with a disability as not perfect the way they are. I am not able to see through their eyes to understand their fear of disability. That´s my disability :-)

I found it inspiring and mostly as part of the human condition.

You answered the pose question but not whether you feel/think that your self esteem is disabled in any way? (by the social standards)

I think this is more plausible in a classroom session and as a group where all get to find a measure of self pride or esteem in creation or a reflection of self image. It might be that 'art' is a better approach to cultural change? There's certainly historical proof for it.

I'm wondering how much the 'standards' still affect those students (or anyone) beyond singular moments of self appreciation in a class.

Does having that impossible standard relentlessly thrust on us, with media marketing, detract from your ability to maintain self esteem?

I think this video makes a statement that reaches far beyond what is physically visible, to an underlying 'ability' or 'inability' to stand and be counted as part of perfection, regardless of standards.

Your point is well made in saying that one is disabled in fear. How do/did you enable your self through your own fear of others being critical of your father?

OMG....not only are these people amazing to put themselves in the window, but I think the sculptor deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for Heart. I could have said...he deserves it for compassion...but I don't think that's why he made the structures.

Obviously he is a compassionate person to do this but more importantly I think he wanted people like me to see that not being a perfect size 8 isn't the end of the world even though I think it is. Of course there's no comparison of my imperfection to their disability.

I have many imperfections, mainly my weight. I'm not sure if my confidence/self esteem would allow me to pose for the window. I would have nothing to lose to pose but I don't think anything would be accomplished either. There are millions of overweight people. They would see me in the window and probably wonder why I did it.

There is a reason why I would do it but I'd rather not say it on here.

Very good thread Buttercup.

Well thank you Daisy

The video was done in the interest of awareness for a (physical) minority. Koodos to them of course. General social standards for perfection affect a majority.

Do you think your confidence or lack of, arises from 'other' people's opinions, or notably the standard of beauty that has been created?

Do you really have imperfections or are they really just things you'd like to change about you? Would one of those things be greater self esteem?

Both. As a woman I am expected to be trim and slim, the prize that men are looking for.

In all honesty, when I am of average weight I definitely do have a good self esteem so I guess in a way that answers your question.

They are imperfections. If I went to a job interview at the weight I am at now and went to the same interview a year later after losing weight, I guarantee you that I would get the job after the second interview.

Would one of those things be greater self esteem?

Funny things is, I have self esteem in things that I'm opinionated about or in the 16 years I was a legal secretary. I even have self esteem and pride in the way I raised my daughter. I'm just hung up on the physical side of my flaws.

Someone close in my life tries to make me think it doesn't matter, but I know it matters greatly to him sigh

Okay, by earning my wage making others beautiful it is a great deal!
Everyday I am exposed to all types of people allowing them to judge me from afar and I care not what they think witch allows me to think freely, never rating or comparing myself to others.
So I guess my standards are minimal, be clean, neat and tidy.

Attending sculpting classes, I've had live models and I would be a model if asked, not sure I would offer unless it was needed.
