Having woke yesterday in pain and unable to take over the counter pain killers, I waited to go to my GP this morning (Monday) only to be told the next available appointment is Thursday afternoon.

Is it any wonder why people go to A&E. I'm now left crawling up the walls.

I suspect your practise is deliberately withholding information from you.

They will have emergency appointments, you just need to find out how to get one.

In the practise I attend calling on the dot of 8.30am, or 2pm is necessary to get an emergency appointment. I start calling a few minutes before and just keep pressing re-call until I get through when necessary.

I suggest you ring up now and ask what their emergency appointment procedure is.

Maybe keep your appointment for Thursday and ask how you can work this issue so you're not left without pain relief and you don't use up vital practise resources. dunno

having asked for an emergency appointment this morning I was told I wasn't deemed as an emergency as I was able to reach the surgery.

If it was to do with my heart problem then I know I would have been seen quickly, so I'd rather not change surgeries.

Are you sure there wasn't a miscommunication between yourself and the receptionist?

If you're able to reach the surgery, you're not entitled to a home visit. An emergency appointment at the clinic is not the same as a home visit.

I've just looked at the NHS Choices literature regarding GP practises. They are independent and as such have their own appointment booking procedures, but they should be able to offer you to see a GP quickly if necessary.

This might be useful...

"Or call NHS 111 by dialling 111 from landline or mobile free of charge.

You can also call us on this number if you have a non-urgent medical query or would like information about another health related issue."

The problem with going elsewhere is medication History. I can't take certain meds due to what I already take. When I phoned the 111 yesterday morning the advice was to see my GP.

I know it wasn't a misunderstanding, she could see my head was resting on my shoulder because I couldn't straighten it, and I was quite firm about the pain I was in.

Yes, and I've been standing in front of a receptionist once with an injured child in my arms, once with a reasonably limp child in my arms. It was some years later that someone in the village told me about emergency appointments and how to get them.

A home visit is not available to those who can physically get to the surgery. An emergency appointment is not the same as a home visit.

Medical history is no longer a problem now everything is computerised, regardless of where you are seen.

medical history is a problem, at least it can be, I needed to tell a stand in GP last year what meds I was on.

I am a strong believer of not using A&E for anything other than life and death but it is easy to see why people choose to go.

Yeah, I've been asked about previous medication to save the GP looking something up in my notes, but medical histories are now computerised and any appropriate medic like a locum GP, anywhere in the UK should be able to access your notes when seeing you in a medical setting, unless there's a technical issue with the computers.

I think part of the problem is people not knowing how to access medical services and part of this will be deliberately withholding information because NHS services are so stretched.

Same here almera but we have some walk in clinics springing up. I am lucky to not have very bad complaints I just go to pharmist.
Government thinking of putting walk in clinics at A&E to get weaned out from those really bad cases. Not bad idea but how will GP earn his wage then mumbling

I've had some very bad GP's before who have given me bad advice and bad treatment. I would be concerned with drop in GP's seeing me.

Agree but I have never had much confedence in doca anyway I think there mind is narrow going all one way--ill health. Lots of times give your body time and good diet excercise will help minor complaints. Once on meds you need more to counteract reactions and so on.
But as I said I am lucky to have not anything really bad going on within me EXCEPT getting older they are not going to treat us now we are deemed unproductive to country. Morning newsmoping
