I am doing the flora mini marathon again in June and want to pick a charity.

I was thinking possibly supporting a charity dealing with depression so if anyone can point me in general direction of a good charity let me know.

There are so many charities and it's damn hard to pick.

It really is very simple, ask yourself what chariatable organisation most closely fits your concern set, google that charity, and contact them for a press pack and sponsership details...thats how i went about getting my work placement, same rules apply...good luck...

Well I have more or less decided on something relating to depression for personal reasons. It's now trying to find either a local one or one that works throughout Ireland.

My advice would be to go for something local, that way you can intergrate with the local community, also, its handy to know a bit about the charity or organisation your intending to support, its funding, and strutcture [in the light of recent charity ceo pay scandals]...I might be being a bit on the warey side there, but i digress...
Regarding to my own situation, my voluntary and work contributions (within the care sector) are local enough for me to track and keep up with the progress of the service users and recipients which is good for me and a comfort for them...

I'll have to have a look around then.

Thank god not everyone thinks like that or an amazing amount of much needed services would close and hit those most in need.

Also go to any AGM and you can get a copy of their annual report which has their accounts in it.

I asked a bloke collecting for CONCERN why they were misleading the general public with their advertising.

Why have they got photos of starving children in Africa on the poster, when they could be honest and have a photo of where our donations were actually being stolen by , sorry Typo, innocent I meant to write, going on the executives salaries.

Yeah, come on charities, let's see a nice big honest advertising campaign featuring photos of big fat greedy executive suits sitting in big flashy sports cars.laugh

Sometimes we need to be more careful of our words as we don't always know what's going on in other peoples lives.

Thanks to everyone for the ideas.

This is not about who gets what it's about me hoping to find a charity that deserves a little help and in doing so helping me.

Nothing is free in this world.

Read the small print, it tells you how much is actually going to the work on the ground, some only give a small percentage. Then decide if you want to donate, but don't judge and condemn all charities, thus punishing those who are providing fantastic much needed services.
That is the point I am trying to make, its the generalisation that gets up my nose, always did laugh

god it would be like a men judging all women by their experiences with some women, oh no wait a minute, that happens on here also

Glatlol: That doesnt sound excessive for that position.

Anyway this thread was started with very good intentions, can we not leave one thread alone and not bring negativity to it.

No, I am not being negative. I am positively supportive of giving money to charity and a firm believer in the principle that when the general public donate money to a charity in good faith, that money should be put to the use it was intended for.

People don't want their hard earned cash being stolen by some fat greedy suit.dunno

Witty, I think the principle of charity is honourable and noble, however, when suits get involved, honour and integrity leave the building. I gave up donating to charities years, I volunteer my time instead and help out locally. thumbs up
