Bob Robinson a Kiwi RAF WW2 pilot shot down wrecking both Knees the Germans replaced both his Kneecaps then repatriated him back to the UK, like Douglas Bada < > likewise Bob Robinson went back to flying, he was flying German made Ball Bearings for the British War Effort from Geneva in Switzerland, to Gibraltar.

Bob's favorite word which i think he created was Marboulius

I was one of those students that regulary went on those Vietnam Moratorium Marches in Sydney. I lot of stuff I was infuenced by by teachers at school about "how wrong this was."

Mainly because of the conscripts being forced to go over there when we did not volunteer for something we did not support because we should let them sort out their own iternal politics.

I was 'called up' for National Service for the 2-year period. I managed to get it defered long enough due to my studies (best influence to pass) and grateful I never had to go to the Vietnam Conflict. I have known a lot of people who did go over there. None have a good story about it and all have issues.

I listened to the extent of the public broadcast of the most recent senate inquiry into boat people

Have also watched full ABC footage of boat people being towed back into Indonesian waters. Which clearly showed customs vessel, an Australian warship probably a frigate and maned navy skiff.
During inquiry the senior public servant explained if boat people were taken into custody then that was done according to law by virtue of the Emigration Act. I'd take issue with aspects of the replies in relation to answers given by the respondents, which is the subject matter of earlier post.
The defence of Australia is in my opinion whats on the table, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan were all premised on lies, lies upon lies will produce the same outcome of those conflicts, e.g. defeat..

Yeah, I didn't get called up, in fact I was not allowed to register for national service because before I was old enough for that I had done my time in the Navy and been to Vietnam. I did try to get them to allow me to register, and then I asked to rejoin the Navy or even join the Army and was not allowed. Were we right? We were not there for the reasons they gave us, but to strengthen our alliance with the USA and to increase the chance of their help in the event that the shooting war with Indonesia (Confrontation for us, Confrontasie for them) hotted up even more. Most Australians do not realize that the Army was fighting Indons, in Borneo, and our ships were sinking Indon boats and ships and also having duels with Indonesian shore batteries.
The times and the issues were not as simple as is generally believed. Issues? Yep I guess we all have our own, and we will take them to our grave. But hell, I would not have missed it.

Yep Rob, much as we may have suffered, it is still a unique experience that can only be understood by those who lived it. And it was a different war for each of us as well.

Sorry all I know of Vietnam was what was shown on TV at the time . Can't recall if we had TV or we were shown at school !!
Do remember seeing troops getting off helicopters !!

We did have a friend who was a sergeant in the army in Vietnam . He used to say the yanks were still fighting the American civil war at the same time . Officers from the north soldiers from the south he hinted very strongly some of those officers had to watch their backs if u know what I'm saying!!

He also said he didn't want to go on patrols with yanks they'd get cleaned up and put after shave on smell them for miles !!

I think us civilians owe those who serve a big thank you !!
We may not agree with the politicians but we shouldn't take it out on the soldiers !!

At the same time Commonwealth Forces were fighting in Borneo the Australian Government was repairing Indonesian military aircraft in Darwin

Vietnam was bad for everyone. And those vets got totally the wrong end of the stick. It was not the soldiers choice whee they went.

Vietnam was the breakup of French Indo-China where the French Army, and later the French Foriegn Legion, could not deal with what was happening. But it was the Yanks going through the McCarthy era of anti-communism and they poured so much into the area to try to stop the spread.

But one does have to look "at the times." Since about 1910, there have been major conflicts going on after many decades of relative peace.

Here in Aust we have many anti-Liberal and anti-Laboring people. And those against using anything that MAY hurt the environment. We do not go out and kill someone because they have driven along a road and run over some endangered species or accidently hooked a Dolphin when looking for a feed.

I have never understood why people condemn those soldiers who have served our country's orders on the command of others.
