I would have thought the chicken. How on earth would the egg be around to hatch to produce the chicken in the first place? Besides, you don't have eggs procreating to produce the chicken, do you? Chickens (well, a chicken and a cockrel) mate to have the egg, right? It needs to be a matured living form to produce offspring, not an embryo, surely?
As it turns out, I was wrong.... Scientists claim it was the egg!
