I don't agree with the death penalty. But on the flip side, murderers have far more rights than their victims did. Laws must be properly followed and they do have their rights within our legal system.
Last time I checked (several years ago and I'm sure it has gone up), it costs more than $80,000 US to house a prisoner in America FOR ONE YEAR! This is more than the average yearly income of half of Americans. Further, with prison overcrowding, they are letting prisoners out earlier and earlier, and back out onto our streets. IMHO, anyone who has a prison sentence of greater than 80 years should be executed after a 5 year wait/appeal period.

Sorry if this offends you, but lets look at the logic of the situation. If you perform such a vile act that you are sentenced to 80+ years, you are most likely not rehabilitatable. Especially in our prison system where that is not a priority or even attempted. Second, one is most likely 18+ to get that kind of sentence. Age 98 is close to or longer than our life expectancy, thus it is a "life in prison" sentence. Third, is being confined to a cage for your lifetime NOT a cruel and unusual punishment, vergering on psychological torture? Hell, even animal activists get upset at food animals being kept in cages/pens because it is cruel! Fourth is economic. I've addressed that already and it just doesn't make sense. Unless we change the prison system where prisoners are forced to work to pay thier own way, rehabilitation is emphasized, psychological counsuling is mandatory, and I'm not ssure what else, the system we have now is not working. But that is a whole different thread. Personally, I would rather die than spend my life in prison. But then I would never perform such a hienous act to get me there in the first place... Prevention and education, before the fact (proactive not reactive), should be a priority.
I'd rather there was no death penalty and instead we locked serious offenders away in prisons that were austere and cheap to run so we can spend more money on good people.
The problem now is that most people are women or think like women and from this they tend use the state and our institutions as mechanisms to Mother grown adults. Which now we means that we allocate vast resources to the most defective of people and discriminate against good people, in the same way that a Mother will give the most of herself to the worst of her children at the expense of all her other children. Or the way a woman rewards bad behaviour by sleeping with bad boys.

You dont agree with the death penalty until, God forbid, anything happened to your loved ones. Then, its a whole different ballgame. Some individuals out there are Evil plain & simple. The world is full of do-gooders & politically correct stay at home types who should be shot basically.

Despite your attempt at reasoning, the act of wilfully ending someone's life, and more often than not is the case, alongside their merciful pleas, belongs in the dark ages.

Doesn't the crime that got them there in the first place belong in the dark ages?

re-read my post & come to your own conclusions.
do-gooders, and people who sit around and pontificate about this and that. AKA: The PC brigade. They burn my cap out those types of people- spineless politicians who live in the world of luxury and tell people how they should behave.

Carmengetme: Too extreme.
well, god forbid, nothing ever happens to your nearest and dearest.
Then i think you would change your attitude. If you ever been a victim of violence or seen violence close up and personal, or its happened in your city to vulnerable members of society then you would soon change your tune.

but we'll agree to disagree shall we.
I have been the victim of violence and do see heinous acts of violence, daily, committed world-wide, but the lynch mob mentality behaviour you are exhibiting is not the answer.

maybe it isnt in your eyes, but why should these people be 'rehabilitated' and allowed to carry on with their lives? go on tell me i would love to know?

You are too blinded by your own hostility of rage to discuss anything rationally with.
SinkingSwimmer: Nope im not, i am very wise to the world. Passionate man yes.
blinded by rage- nope. But, do your best to try and analyse me & convince me that i am wrong and you are right.
I have no interest in analysing you or convincing you I am right. We have differing viewpoints, and I don't have the time to debate with you right now.
It's 3:57am over here and I need to get some more sleep. I do have a job to go to in a few hours.

These people leave so much pain, so much agony, actually break up families, Yes let them feel a few moments of great pain while the above mentioned feel it for the remainder of thier lives. I think the death penalty should be universal across the USA.Groups like ACLU, religious orginizations should not intefer once sentenence is passed. You bleeding hearts you not the person who bled at the hands of these people. Distance from these people makes you so liberal until it reaches you or one of yours.
