I'd love to be able to reply to the highlighted bit, but I can't.
All I can say is the "travelers" I have met have been, without exception, among the most polite and respectful people I have ever met
One story that always sticks in my mind......many years ago, there were travelers living in caravans just a few hundred feet from where I was living. One day my car died just where they were, not a kick out of her. A young fella came over and asked if he could help. His father came over after him and between the two of them, they got my car going again. The young fella asked me if I could spare a few pounds for him and received a very quick and sharp clip around the head from his father who told me to ignore him and that he was just happy they could help me.
Just one of many stories of kindness that I could tell, but in an attempt to answer your question I think it's the same as everything in Ireland.....the minority that are a**hole cause the whole community to be tarred with the same brush (reality TV shows don't help either).

Not at all. The interactions I've had with Travellers have all been the same as with any other Irish person. Had a great night dancing with a group a few months ago

I think that you have to be careful, and define what you mean by "travellers" ...
Far as I can see there are two distinct groups - genuine travelling communities, and generally these people are quite pleasant and polite as has been said before ...
But also there are the "tinkers" (for want of a better word) who in my experience will scam you and rip you off soon as look at you ( asphalt your drive? Fix your roof? Guttering looks a bit dodgy..etc ) ... these people will nick anything that is not nailed down, and half the stuff that is ....

in my area.travellers are responsible for;mistreatment of horses and dogs,drug dealing,burgalrys,loan sharking,assaults,criminal damage,illegal sulky races,illegal dog fights,illegal bare knuckle fights,social welfare fraud.very little is done by the police.the descrimination is there i grant you that.but its there for a reason!!.the traveller people in my area have ruined it through drugs and intimidation.they are the closest .thing in ireland to

for my canadian freind i should point out that the term "irish traveller"is the name put on the gypsy people in ireland.also new age travellers who live in houses as opposed to caravans which they lived in some years ago and still do but not as much.;)
