Almost 800 childrens bobies in a septic tank in Tuam.
That borders on the Holocaust for me.
Today I am ashamed to be Irish.

I'm not ashamed to be Irish. In the same way the ordinary Germans can't be held responsible for the holocaust..

Lay the blame at who was responsible.

Your not Irish in the first place, you've plenty to be ashamed of but this isn't one of them.

They should be. Makes me glad not to be a member of any church or religion any more. Even trying to get your head around it is difficult. Almost 800 kids thrown in a hole in the ground.

Don't beat yourself up. Makes you wonder what other secrets from the grave Ireland has. It is the same as the Jewish holocaust. It's akin to a war crime.

@Snowy, your comment shows just how narrow minded and bigoted you are that's all I'm saying about your comment.

I,m thinking of the parents that sent their young daughters in to these institutions. What was their mindset ? Were they small farmers ? 4 foot six inches...

How can pointing out a simple fact make you a bigot?

jt3jo: Shame on certain members of the Catholic Churce then... The parents of these young women should have stood up. Would you let your young child go off to an institution like that ? Nomatter what times we are living in, would you do that ?

No i would not! Ya have to remember them were very different times were people felt powerless and hopeless against a very powerful enity such as the unholy cult which could quite easily manipulate society against any dissents.

In the 1940's Ireland had the highest rate of psychiatric incarceration in the WORLD, believe it or not. Same mindset going on, those who were awkward or wouldn't conform were shut away/up.

There was people put in mental hospitals in this country as late as the 60's and 70's with damn all wrong with them aside from been a bit daft.

MADDOG69: Yeah. See I am kinda sure. Because in every state that was relatively poor, similar happened as there was no social welfare system.

If those institutions weren't there, those women would have died on the road along with their babies and the dogs would have ate them instead. There was no illusion among the families where they were going. IN every town that had a place for fallen women, people looked down on them. Kids bullied the kids from those women. If you were bold you were told you be sent into the place with the bad kids as a scare And I can tell you, looking at my own extended family history, that there were some families that broke with tradition and kept their children that were born out of wedlock. And even today, there are people who will refuse to recognise their own half brothers/sisters because of shame and nothing to do with the Church.

Just like the government of the day, the Church acted on the social demands of the Society at the time. And if our economy collapsed, people would allow the Church back into a more important role in society. It happens and happened everywhere else before with some variation.

In countries where the State could afford to take on the position on the role of looking after these type of people, the same chit happened. Mass graves out the back of old hospitals etc.... a common thing.

thumbs up

Fraya: And at the time I strongly suspect it was not at all as horrifying a thought as it is now being justified with catholic "morality" and "but sure isn't it a blessing it didn't have to live in sin"
lol IN fairness the kids died. They weren't killed. With a huge infant mortality rate in this country at the time, there was a lot of dead kids. It was not uncommon for every 5+ family to have at least 1 brother/sister that had died young.

I feel Irish people are falling in to the same vein. Accept everything that is thrown at you.

You got to wonder if the Irish nation is so use to be being used and abused by those in power that it knows no other way, that we have become accustomed to our abusers that we don't know what life would be like without them.

Stockholm syndrome on a national scale???

Ireland is a "mickey-mouse" country. It has always and still fails its people. High levels of unemployment, emigration, corruption...these have always been a part of Ireland since the foundation of our State. We are good at one thing though...self-congratulations. "We're a great little country sur we are". Yeah right!thumbs down

it is a lovely little country we have lots lots of potencial after reforms in policies are announced and people in power are held accountable for any mishaps that take place,.think we could be going through a stage where skelingtons locked in the closet will resurface,...

As Larry said above we can't pretend forever. As a society, we have to look at and accept our failings.
People in power are not held accountable. There has been no reform in policies. And we don't need locked closets to open for skeletons to resurface. As a people, we already know these things are going on. Irish people and State institutions knew that children were been abused for years but turned a blind eye. Everyone knows that unmarried women were been sent to these places. Sure it was the State who gave the Church a mandate to set up these places. And the people gave the State a mandate to do this. We know that the gardai are a corrupt institution. We don't need inquiries to tell us this. We know they have killed people in custody. We know they constantly overlook people's rights in this country.
Economic policy is still been dictated to us. We have always had high unemployment and emigration. People think that what we are suffering now is just a blip. But this is not a blip. This is normal for Ireland. The boom was the blip...And then all we done was robbed the little wealth our future children and grandchildren would have had. Ire..sham instead of Ireland......
