Hi Pedro, I think it is a neccessary Evil with a very chequered past. It is a pseudo science but it is only now, that science is beginning to understand the workings of the Brain and understand what causes Depression and Psycosis, delusions, mood swings etc., Medications are a help now and mean that most people with a mental health issue can lead a happy and relatively normal life. Thats my view in a Nutshell.
Necessary Evil ?uh oh That's because some psychiatrists are Egocentric and dont listen to their patients but put them into boxes. Also the past of psychiatry is frightening and there is still alot they need to learn about the Human condition and unhappiness. sad flower

Hi Peach, Yep I think the Stigma is beginning to diminish abit. Everyone knows somebody who has a relative or friend who has committed suicide through not getting proper psychiatric help or proper Counselling and Medication. Depression distorts the mind and makes everything look black and hopeless. We need to end the stigma. Hope you are enjoying the sun in Wexford Glamorous lady heart wings

Pedro I think most psychiatrists do now know how the mind works from a chemical standpoint. Its no good going for Therapy and things if the actual chemistry in the brain is screwed up. Through DNA or from lifes abuses/childhood trauma or whatever. Some people need to be on Medication to function, to be good parents, to be happy. If we have a low blood sugar and have Diabetes, we have no problem taking a tablet for that, so why have a problem taking medications for Depression and anxiety and psychosis ? I dont think going it alone is wise.

A viable alternative in many cases is a change in lifestyle; a healthy diet; exercise for mind and body; yoga; mindfulness; proper breathing; cognitive therapy if needed.
Meditation rather than medication.

The body has an innate ability to heal itself, but we live in a world dominated by pharmaceuticals. We drug children just for being children, it makes them easier to handle and train. Adults are medicated if they have feelings/emotions that do not concur with what we believe adults should feel/express.

A medicated world creates a docile population, much easier to control.

thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up

Most drugs used on people with so called "mental illness" just sedate them. This cannot in any way deal with or enable them to see the root cause of their problems.Sweeping people under the carpet this way is disgusting and barbaric.

hi Molly yes I do agree with you to a large extent it's exactly how a member of my family felt about taking medication and said it just suppresses emotions that were never expressed buried deep in the sub conscience,..but some conditions do have to be treated with meds to just try and settle the thought process as the brain can be a tangle of wires so to speak,I think most of the work as you say is down to maintaining healthy habits, also self esteem is very low and needs support and positive people around them,I really admire people that have come through mental illness and all of us have been in some shape or form effected by life's circumstances,no two people are the same, what is stress to one no bother to another and sensitive people who care alot suffer depression it can effect anyone and I think anyone that has suffered mental trauma are special I really believe that.thumbs up

well said gloss,...do not let the condition be oneself it is something to just be aware of and mind it but a condition is not the person,....I remember one lady that was confined to her wheelchair at day care centre for ol folks said to me,"you know she said when I come here I'm allowed be just me talk and laugh with my friends who don't see me as some ol one in a wheelchair.
