New Zealand successfully eliminated its five-cent piece in 2006, after dumping its one- and two-cent coins. And since at least 2009, the Australian government has been considering whether to follow suit by killing its own five-cent coin, millions of which have actually been manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint for a profit.

The 5 cent coin was first introduced with decimalisation on 14 February 1966. The original reverse design has not been changed since the introduction.

All of the first issue of 5 cent coins in 1966 was produced at the Royal Mint, London. Since the first production from London, 5 cent coins have been produced by the Royal Australian Mint, the Royal Mint, Llantrisant and the Royal Canadian Mint.

Nominal specifications

composition 75% copper 25% nickel
shape circular
edge milled
mass (grams) 2.83
diameter (millimetres) 19.41

Australia spends $110 million a year replacing lost coins

Australians lose 255 million coins every year - down the back of the couch, taken overseas in the pockets of tourists and stuck to footpaths.

The five cent coin actually costs six cents to produce. Photo: Danielle Smith

Mint considering deleting loss making 5 cent coin

The withdrawal of the smallest denomination coins sometimes coincides with the introduction of large denomination notes. When copper coins went, the $100 note came into being.

Many people use their debit/credit cards for payment and physical currency is used less and less these days. Great for the banks and Govt to see where we are spending our money. It also stops a lot of people from doing the dodgy stuff with the Tax Dept.

there was talk a few years ago, thatb they were going to change the face of the notes, and make everyone that had cash stuck under their pillow take it to the bankand claim it in exchange for the new currency notes,it was going to put a spanner in the works of all the underhanded crims,as the money all had to be claimed under tax,but it never came into being,as there is so many crooked politiciansand financial institution workers.it would certainly lower the national debt

The reserve bank moved the decimal point here dropping coins and introducing 1 and 2 dollar coins . Although they never put it that way and not all done at once I think .
