The withdrawal of the smallest denomination coins sometimes coincides with the introduction of large denomination notes. When copper coins went, the $100 note came into being.
Many people use their debit/credit cards for payment and physical currency is used less and less these days. Great for the banks and Govt to see where we are spending our money. It also stops a lot of people from doing the dodgy stuff with the Tax Dept.

The reserve bank moved the decimal point here dropping coins and introducing 1 and 2 dollar coins . Although they never put it that way and not all done at once I think .Many people use their debit/credit cards for payment and physical currency is used less and less these days.
