TheresMyFriend: I'm just guessing, but if I did that... what would keep them from inviting all the other squirrels to an "all you can eat, banquet"? And besides, in a group gathering like that... you're going to have at least one in the bunch, that still wants a tomato.... Just saying...

But, thanks for the idea.... Have a good evening...

For your squirrels, you could offer them some other food, perhaps some walnuts or pecans or even peanuts.

laugh

Myself, I am having a battle with female aphids on my herbs and flowers, that keep reproducing by the millions.

uh oh

In the Aztec folklore there is a rule that anyone growing vegetables should seed some extra rows of the produce for other people to get some and there was a rule of 4 rows at the minimum (that could apply for animals as well).

The tomatoes here cost about 25 cents of a dollar per a pound and they can be cheaper if bought by the box, yet there is nothing better than home growm vegetables.

I guess next season it would be good to plant some tomatoes for you.

JeanKimberley: squirrels are my favorite rodent - can't you just grow a few tomatoes just for your furry friend? Share in your garden's bounty?

My friend has a terrible time with them, because they chew on the wires. Sometimes it cuts off her telephone and sometimes it gets one electrocuted...

thumbs up My favourite too. The N. American Grey and Black Squirrel,
(same Species) is millions of years older than the rat. They are so
adaptable, hence their survival. I feed em, and Chipmunks. There is
more tarmac and concrete around urban centres than Trees, what else
should we expect? I know some people that get pissed off at Birds.

Morning girl....
After all this hassle to have my own tomato plants to enjoy the fruits of my labor... I may not even fool with them again, next year. With what I've spent, and the extra efforts put into this project... I've already over-paid for the end results. i.e. home grown tomato... Heck I could just pay 1.69 to 1.99 per pound at the store/market, and only spend a fraction of my cost so far.

I think next year, just out of "spite", is to grow peppers... then let the 'varmints' have at it, while I still "pick them (squirrel) off, one at a time"....

Here are a couple of links that might help with your issue. You may have already research this, but... here it is, and hope they help you:

Good luck, and keep me updated, if it works or not..

Hi John
I utilize a lethal weapon against those little creatures: a used toothbrush and send them (the females) several floors below. The problem are the males (product of a biased nature) which develop wings and they can fly but the females stay at home on the plants and are the ones brushed away and crashing down below.

That works well and with the temperature droping, those aphids will not be a problem.

Thanks any way.

The pepper trick used to work for me. I had the same exact problem when I lived in town. I would also put a pile of acorns from the oak in the back of the house on the opposite side of my yard the tomatoes are idk if that did help or not but they did stop.

I would not give up on the tomatoes, just plant more that what you want (need) next season and place some feeders for the squirrels and DO shoot the squirrels but with a camera. They are cute and smart creatures.

Soon I will be placing a Hummingbird’s feeder in my balcony and it is great to see them and sometimes I get some good pictures of them.

If you can not defeat the enemy, join with them!

Some squirrels are tough to handle. The ones that complain about their partners or ask dumb questions or think theirs is gold plated and place unrealistic conditions of friendship. Or continually have a bad hair day and their tails won't fluff out right. They may look cute and very playful and always skitter about having no direction in life waiting for some burly dude to feed em some kind of line they will fall for only to find they have been played. Yes squirrels are delicate critters usually seen holding Armani handbags and maybe wearing a hat and a skirt driving a BMW or Mercedes on their way to a legal beagle to sign settlement papers. I'm not sure there are any nice squirrels out there anymore who just want to have fun. Usually most just want to toy with rats who try to write serenades of affections to squirrels. Ah but we have to understand squirrels are rats as well. Oh no I think I better hide my nuts I can sense a squirrel attack any moment now. Look out!!! a spitfire flying squirrel is overhead she has me in her sights!! Load the tomatoes fire one!! fire two!!! Too late!! I can feel her claws digging in and scratching!! Fluffy tails a fluttering and quite some chittering!!!

hahaha,
That was a good comparison of the parallel lives that some seem to lead with the squirrel, or was it the squirrel that led the parallel events? Does it really matter, nah! But, either way... "fire one tomato, fire another tomato"? Really...? Can I afford the ammunitions? Especially after all the effort/work already invested? Nah... not really!

Peace is now at "Tomato Hill"... time for a quick sandwich (tomato, of course).

First of all you've provided a ladder right to the feast! Move your plants away from the trellis/fence.

Second, use only strong fishing line to hang up the tomato baskets, so they cannot easily scoot down from the roof. This also works for bird/hummingbird feeders which squirrels will raid regularly.

For aphid infestation, see if you can purchase some natural enemies - ladybugs!

Hey Carol, thanks for the suggestions.

#1... I have the plants hanging from an eyehook, under the eave of the roof. The planters are set back away from the edge of the eave, towards the side of the house. (actually leaning against the house) I also have included a wire screen nailed/attached upright as a barrier, to the edge of the eave, right above the planters. The planters are far enough back away from the edge, that to get to them from above... the squirrel would be more than half way out, so even the gravity would pull it away from the plants, even if it jumped.

#2... There is no way for the squirrel to have anything to "slide" down on. Hence, the eyehook.

#3... The aphid, is no problem so far... dusting and spraying takes care of that.

Just saying, as much as I love a good tomato.....
With 1 in the refrigerator, have eaten 1 at breakfast, and 1 last night for supper, and 1 for lunch and 4 still on the window sill to finish ripening, and 21 still on the vine....still growing... Wheew! Did someone say they were good for you? haha

My favorite quick sandwiches. I like the Lettuce, Tomato, & Bacon using the toasted Texas toast bread... and maybe some "Tater Tots" and iced tea on the side...
