I've had lots of practice since a child of looking someone in the eyes. That was how my father punished me and my older brothers and sisters if we did something wrong by sitting across from him and look him directly in his eyes.If we took our eyes off him we would have to sit and stare at him longer.

epicure: I do, but if they are disturbed I stop...
It depends.
If I'm reflecting, or introspecting while I'm talking, I tend to stare off into the middle distance. Sometimes people find that disconcerting.
I'm also partially dependent upon lip-reading, so I've developed the art of flipping between eye contact and watching people's mouths. If it's noisy, I just frown in concentration at people's mouths and people have to put up with that.
I don't always find eye contact comfortable and often I have to make a conscious effort.
I don't have a problem with people who feel uncomfortable with eye contact. It's kind of a cultural thing. In Chinese culture, it's rude to make eye contact.

That was an exercise in unnerving you, love. The key purpose of this was intimidation and dominance.
It was much exercised many years ago as a regular thing (deemed a 'discipline thing' amongst the traditional). Not so much now as the norm, but will still indicate an oppressive tendency to one's nature.....
I have similar stories relayed to me by my mother about her father/parents.
Bet you were glad to reach adulthood, weren't you?

Being the youngest of my brothers and sisters I'm only going by what they had told me happened at that time.
My father died in a car wreck ten days after my 9th birthday so I had no actual proof if what he did was fact.
