OK... squirrel cage trap, due to deliver tomorrow (Thursday).... 7/3/14 QUESTION: To shoot or drown said captured squirrel....
They are destroying everything, (mainly) tomato plants, gnawing holes in dog food containers, digging holes in the yard, to bury their nuts, etc. I'm at my "wits" end... Need to take charge and DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE... Sure, they are cute to watch and look at, but not at MY EXPENSE....

Hey Conrad.... that sounds like some good options, but..... It wouldn't set too well with my dog...
The squirrels already keep her busy, but she can't do it all, and she can't climb the tree... too many of them. So, looks as if it is up to me to take a more permanent action.

Hang outside a picture of Obama and other of the Bushes and just in case Hilary’s and B. Clintons’ as well.
I know, and to look them in the big brown eyes, it tugs at my heart strings....
But, I don't speak "squirrel", so I can't argue with them about the issues at hand. And if they haven't caught on to me and the dog's actions of scaring them off, then a stronger method of communicating my concerns to them, has to be implicated.

What if you provided them with nuts and placed things in the garden that they would find attractive for storing and hiding their nuts? I'm sure there must be a vet or pet shop near you that could advise you. Killing them seems horribly drastic.

Well, then that would be defeating my agenda... to get rid of them from my property.
The other way would only be "inviting" them AND the rest of the bunch over to "John's house for breakfast/brunch/lunch/supper/dinner/and snacks"!!! Just say'n... wished they understood my regret of doing this... but will make one last attempt to call the local Humane Society & Adoption Center, to see what suggestions they might have... That is the best I can do...
Ccincy: All kidding aside you may want to contact Rodent or pest control and see if they may have any ideas.
I understand you don't want to kill them but you may not have a choice.
I know that when some of our Ohio State parks get overrun by ducks and geese they have no choice but kill them.
Where I live, CC... it's already epidemic proportions. The postman, said everybody in my area is having the same complaints/problems. Where I live, used to be nothing but a swamp area back in the 40's & 50's, till they started to develop the land for housing. There are so many trees around, it's no wonder there are so many of the pests.
Thanks for the suggestion, and the idea... But, like you said...sometimes there are things we don't like to do that have to be done! I feel this is one of those things to make a "balance" in life...

Do you have very many crows?? I see the crows always fighting with them. I saw one the other day as I was driving down the road, the crow was eating the abdominal muscles and insides of that little guy. ( not the band "The Crows" the actual black birds. I know some people out in the country shoot them and eat them. I know they can be very much a nuisance, but I like to watch them play and chase each other around. I had one fall from a tree and I took it to the emergency pet hospital. Not so keen on rats or possum though I have seen those as pets as well.

If I saw that, I'd be mortified and upset for days.
2intrigued: On the same site I posted above, someone suggested planting marigolds in the garden...apparently squirrels don't like to be around marigolds.
This is true.
We have a large community garden where I work, we also have a large population of squirrels. We plant marigolds around the perimeter of the garden and the squirrels stay away from the garden.
