That's true,Ian,i've seen women on dating sites saying they're from Alabama,London,or Arkansas,Wales,those ppl are obviously scammers.------ This thread is Archived ------

Could be scammers alright, or could be just that they commute between the two places. Also place names were carried over to the USA and Australia when they were created and the UK and other places too, e.g Baltimore and Castlemaine (towns in Ireland but also in the US and Australia)
A bit of info for ye (whether ye want it or not! lol): Baltimore is the anglicised version of gaelic words meaning town of the big house literally (Baile Tí Mór).

There are several factors to consider about scammers and yes Geography is one of them. Other is when people open up several profiles and make a comment once a year or so. That could also be a red flag.
The solution is simple:

She's right, do not send money, foods, clothing, etc. to places with names like Ougadougou, which is in Upper Volta, but then again, perhaps send some change to Oodnadatta in case they are raising money for a new town sign and name, which is in Australia At least names of towns in the 'British' Isles are not half as confusing or bizarre as in the US, like Paranoia in Colorado, or Sebastopol, Louisiana; Humansville, Missouri. Nevermind that nearly each state has a town named after either another state or city, such as in Florida,(the state) with towns called Havana, Switzerland, Seville, Melbourne and Brighton….while Palestine, Turkey, Sudan, Paris, India, China and Egypt are all in Texas…go figure. With the love of guns so prevalent in the US, one would think that towns with names like Rile, Colorado; Gun Barrel City, Texas would be filled to overflowing….and if by chance anyone looking for a planet, they're all in the US...

Yes, do not send anything to anyone (refrigerators included). There was a case here of someone sending his refrigerator (or so he said) to people in need with not electric energy I think he was an scammer and wanted some people to send some help trough him.
If people really want to help people in need, it is better to do local charity or contact the international agencies for it (although in the last ones, one wonders how much gets to the people in need). Going local is a good choice.

It's been my experience that a lot of scammers pick locations which are little more than an intersection in a rural area. I think they may do this so they wont meet a person that may be familiar with where they claim to reside.
