lifeisadream: Tomatoes are in season that is why they are inexpensive, besides I got the cheapest which are the smallest because I am going to grind them for different types of salsa. But there are times when they are expensive considering that we use lots of tomatoes in our cooking.

The highest price for tomatoes here that I remember was like $24/kilo Pesos which is USA dollar $0.90 per pound and it happens during the winter season.

Other element to consider in vegetables is whether they are “field” grown or under greenhouses. The first ones are better and more nutritious as well.

I agree, field grown seems to have the flavors that the other don't contain. It's interesting to read of our differences in something so simple as "tomatoes"..... And the winter season for increase in prices... I understand very well. I think that is true most places. I like the Roma, simply for it's size. I can take one of those, and make a sandwich, with nothing left over... unlike the larger ones.

Back in the mid 80's ( I think), My 2nd wife and I took a vacation. I went back to Colorado for a few days. Then we worked our way down the Texas border till we reached McAllen, Tx. We crossed over into Mexico in 2 different places. COMPLETELY different world. The first time I crossed over, right in the middle of some little town, with the beat up old yellow bus (taxi) picking up people and letting them off. STUPID me, should have known better... BUT as I was approaching an intersection, (sight seeing, being an obvious tourist).... AND not recognizing the RED octagonal shape sign "ALTO".... I ran right through it, without stopping!!!!!! I was lucky there were no traffic police there.... Whew! Close one... I started thinking "99 years in solitude"..... NO! NO!.... I got the heck out of there, before I did really get caught at something I was stupid about.... That was my memory of your country, but it was beautiful, and above all... interesting.

TheresMyFriend: Mexican cornbread is in the oven, and the butter is sitting on the side, ready to be "slapped & swabbed" on top of said muffin, when done. umm, ummm

Made a little adjustment to said recipe. Instead of using regular "whole kernel corn", I substituted for "whole kernel corn WITH small chopped/diced red & green bell peppers", PLUS I threw in a few small "pinches" of bacon bits in the mix.... tada! That sounds very tasty to me,i love hot food.

Well, if you love hot food, you should give it a try. And you can use your on judgement as far as how hot you want it.... Goes good with all kinds of beans.... Good crumbled up in chili, and some soups... Give it a try...

You may have to Google the recipe, there are so many different combinations of ingredients.

Not sure I've seen it at the grocery store either. May have to just make it yourself.

My recipe:
Mix your cornbread ingredients as usual....
Then just add your Jalapeno peppers, shredded cheddar cheese, whole kernel or cream style corn....
Then put into the oven, just as you would your regular cornbread.
NOTE: I did add a few bacon bits, and 1 small diced white onion... (not required)

Try it, and let me know how it turned out for you.

Driving in Mexico can be challenging. Although, I have been to other places where I believe it is more difficult to drive safely, like in Cairo, Egypt. As for the language, common sense would be the best language.

Every country is interesting in one way or another and people have to adapt in order to enjoy and learn from new place and a new culture. For me, being in USA the only thing that bothered me was the smell of the dishwashing soap (any brand) laugh that could give me a headache.

You are fortunate to get to travel or have traveled many places, that others only dream of.

My 2 trips into Mexico, was the only time I can remember being outside my country.

I think when I was just a tot (age less than 4 years old), I think I crossed over into Canada with parents... but too young to even notice.

Then the closest I got to Cuba, was when I visited briefly, in Key West, Fl (90 miles between them).

NOTE: Reference "squirrels & tomato plants"....:
With efforts of keeping the squirrels at bay, and tending to my tomato plants, this morning out of the 2 hanging planters.... I counted a total of 20 tomatoes, at various stages of growth. I had a sandwich from one yesterday, and there is nothing like the taste of "your own grown" tomato...
Have a good day...

Thanks John!

Fortunate to travel?
The traveling bug goes beyond material means I do know of people that can afford to travel but decide not to because they do not like to be out of their comfort zone.

People chose to have a house (or several), car (s), properties, etc… I have chosen to travel over everything. I have not savings, not properties (scammers and materialistic people take note) I have not material possessions and if I had to go this very moment from this world I would do it in a happy way very happy and yes tomatoes are the best when grown by yourself.
