Not a lot really Lookin, but I am also interested. Just this morning I phoned my sister in QLD who has a mobile home and also an off-road camper trailer.
She explained all the terminology, eg 5th wheeler was mentioned but to be honest I came away still not really knowing that much.
Is a 5th wheeler the type that converts your ute into a mini semitrailer?
The advantage is that once you are set up you can unhitch the ute and drive around freely. With a motor home you have to pack away all loose items, take down the annex, disconnect your power water etc, any time you need to go into town.
You want to quit your job and hit the wide open road?
I get tempted.

Hey! wave

Wow...the kind you have a phot of is your best bet if you want to use your truck. These are used everywhere in Florida here! The very well to do have the motor homes and they tow a car and or motorcycles behind them.

Lot of fun!
banana yay

I actually have a friend that lives in one...he says he does it on purpose so he won't get serious with anyone..lrolling on the floor laughing . Silly guy....then he whinged about not having a woman in his life...lol.

Just do so,e research on them. So sometimes it's best to purchase a used one instead of a new one too. As long as it's not to old, the manufacturers warranties are still good.

Rent one first and see what you like! And have lots of fun!applause

You do have to have a ute or trayback to tow a 5th-wheeler around. Which also means you have to have the right size one for the vehicle you are towing. Your Sonny Boy might struggle a bit.

I do know that most 4WDs will tow normal caravans quite well although some of the SUVs might struggle. Not sure about the Hilux for towing a 5th-wheeler but I have seen a Mazda BT50 towing a quite large off-road caravan. Off-road for this guy was taking it along a dirt road.

I would suggest going along to the next caravan & camping show (2 in Melb in a few months) and having a chat with a couple of manufacturers/salepeople.

I'm going to google 5th wheeler clubs and stuff and talk to peeps. I've been yacking to a woman from vic roads earlier on phone and she explained gross weights of tow vehicles and of trailers etc..

She gave me a good tip thumbs up "make sure if it's imported from america" either don't buy it or have it converted to australian standards professor coz you don't want the door on 5th wheeler to be on the drivers side rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing .... walk out & SPLAT!! laugh

rolling on the floor laughing Hey......lol...you know we put the steering wheel on the correct side!!

rolling on the floor laughing I felt so bad for my son in law on his first visit...I just put him in the car and told him to drive...rolling on the floor laughing Him being an Aussie and probably had been driving on the wrong side of the road all those years the poor guy was terrified he'd been taught the wrong way to drive....rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
It took it like a soldier though and corrected me and let me know we didn't continue the right way that the mother land England told us to do things and that's why we were so messed up over here...rolling on the floor laughing

Then my first visit to Australia....I had to endure his and my daughter's driving on the wrong side of the road....rolling on the floor laughing . Gawd...that was any eye opener sitting in the front passenger seat! He got the biggest kick!

---- IMAGE REMOVED because photobucket.com no longer allows embedded images ----This is all you need , total cost including rover and generator 10 thousand , comes with spare g/box , LD28 Nissan motor . True off road performance as I doubt rover could get back up the hill just to the left with a single set of chains today .A fifth wheel stops a lot of capacity to carry other stuff , quad bike and the like .

i think fifth wheel lessens the value of having a Ute, the space the fifth wheel takes up for no real benefit, just as easy to unhitch a proper Off Road Camper. One that can handle miles of corrugation, navigate winding mountain tracks, can cross small rivers and tows behind any proper 4x4 (4x4 box) vehicle

I can't see much benefit , you still need a turning circle so a lot of the trailer has to be back anyway from the deck , having an area above the deck would be a problem off road .What is not shown in my pic I could not turn tight enough just before that pic was taken and had a wheel over the bank to stop hitting the caravan , not a good idea having caravan above the vehicle as well to manage as well . For some reason cameras don't work when every body's holding their breath and expecting calamity , least not round here .

Guess it depends where your heading, whether on your own, with a midwifee-agent, or whole tribe.
Here is a link to reviews on quite a few
