My ex-In-laws are/were emigrants who did not want to become Aussies. They did want to do the double-dip with a pension from the old country (because they were still citizens of that country) and one from Australia. Hang on, they only worked for half the time in the old country and the rest here. They should only get half pensions from each. Does not work that way for some reason.
Many people "eligable" for Aussie Govt handouts have moved back to the "old country" and get an Aussie Pension which is more than some workers get there. And received the double dose of Juliar's Aussie Incentive/Stimulus Package to ALL Social Benefit receivers. Oops, how many $MMs went overseas with no stimulus to the Aussie economy?
I have worked full time since 1969 with 3 breaks in employment of 3 months, and not having worked for the last 15 months. In those times of not working, I have received a grand total of 4 weeks pay only after being off work seriously ill for 2 months (and less than 1/2 my then wage with zero from my then employer).

Sorry, Rob, I think you may have misunderstood my situation over the last 45 years. I qualified for "Sickness Benefits" in 1971 only after being off work for 2 months (and had no sick leave from my employer). The rest of the time I have not worked has been my decision and not sought any money from the Govt. I do not have a gripe about that.
One thing that has always erked me is that I have worked and struggled to provide for my family, going without many luxuries such as ice-cream for desert and half decent coffee while I see others who have never worked getting thier rent-free housing recarpeted and repainted and then complaining that the tradie has not done a decent job. And then complain because the Estate Agent "charges them a fortune" to rent out the coastal holiday home they own.
"Ooh, did I tell you how small this Houso block is? I can only just managed to fit the caravan and the boat in the driveway and I am forced to park my 4WD out on the road and the kids have nowhere to park?" I actually have had people call me when I worked on Councils and complain like that about the lack of on-street parking.

Wash i don't know anything about centerlink, i never darken there door thankfully.
Rather i like to touch on the subject of assisting government employees, like most people they live off government hand outs, each week or fortnight they pick up a government handout e.g pay...
So that they put food on there table they assist others that also want food on there table however they receive week or fortnight handout that is called new-start, dole, pension all manner of labels described as government hand outs.
Best way to assist other government employees is in writing ask a question (?)
That helps all the public servants, if nobody asked a question they would no longer have a job, so in writing ask quests...

\You never lose your Tax File number. Same as Driver's License. I moved from NSW and lost my Australian Driver's License.
Or so I thought. Mate had moved NSW to Qld and changed his License details. After recently moving back to NSW, he got his old license number back. Whne he queried his origianl License number, the reply was "We know who you are and who you were."

I have worked in all 3 levels of Government. Believe it or not, there are people there who do actually work. Hardest workers are in Local Government (Councils). What I have found is that most people perceive that people in Govt do nothing and there are a lot who seek that employment for that reason.
Most people think all they do is sit round thinking up ways to screw people out of more and more money, while they help themselves to as much as they can get,

My family of previous and current generations have worked for themselves. My brother, sister and I have all married people from another country. I have worked most of my life in Govt sectors. I think I may have a reasonable understanding of peoples working beliefs.
My "Aussie" family have always looked at "How can we better ourselves by improving what we do."
My "Other" family have always looked at "I am better than them."
I have grown up with Chinese and Italians around me where they have migrated here to Australia and "seen the Lucky Country" where they can do an honest days work and receive and honest days pay.
I admire the likes of Frank Pace, a Maltese emmigrant who started a chook farm on the outskirts of Sydeny way back when and who is recognised now as the largest single-owner egg-producer in the world. And this was before he took over a few other egg-layer businesses that were going broke well before the competition institgated by the likes of Woolies & Coles to defeat Aldi.
