Have names of places, towns & villages that are un-pronoucable? Or is that simply one of life's unanswerable questions...?

It's one of these daft things I often ponder on while having a toke..

Why do french have such sucky attitudes? but I guess we all have some life unanswerable questions :D all places, towns and villages in Malta have their english name and Maltese name, so I find it hard to understand how they can possibly be unpronounceable

I have no idea Kris. Why don't you ask a French person why they have 'sucky attitudes'..

grin

This answers question?

Maltese (Malti) is the national language of Malta and a co-official language of the country alongside English, while also serving as an official language of the European Union, the only Semitic language so distinguished. Maltese is descended from Siculo-Arabic (the Arabic dialect that developed in Sicily and later in Malta, between the end of the ninth century and the end of the twelfth century). About half of the vocabulary is derived from standard Italian and Sicilian; English words make up between 6% and 20% of the Maltese vocabulary, according to different estimates (see below). It is the only Semitic language written in the Latin script in its standard form.WIKI

Sheds light on the subject. But how do you pronounce 'Ta' Xbiex, Marsaxlokk or Xwieki' they look as if they've been taken from a Star Wars movie...

(no offence to my M&M friends)...

It is nice to ask how to pronounce these Maltese words. I think the best way to know is to listen when the are spoken live. It may be interesting to know that a lot of scholars from all over Europe and elsewhere are taking language courses in Maltese. They find it fascinating.

So the bookworms and academics of this world are going to the Lava Rock to explore what vices it has to offer...

@ Radders... They still sound like places from a Star Wars movie to me

@ Kris... Have you found out why (in your opinion) the French have sucky attitudes yet?

Quite easily pronounced to us locals. It is very easy once you understand the letter phonetics. They follow a rule..and never change. Ever tried reading Chinese or indeed Irish? :) I had an Irish friend tell me once, ... If you can read and write and talk Maltese, you are advantaged in daring to learn Irish! So there! :)

X sounds like Sh... as in shallow
ie next to each other sounds like a long e...as in wheel
So Ta' Xbiex sounds like... Ta Shbeesh

Now the others should be *easy* to pronounce.. Give it a shot!

grin
